Arguably, China has a middle class - a group of people who have some access to means and power, people who aren’t workers and yet aren’t at the top either. China’s middle class is the capitalists.

Today, for the most part, yeah. It’s a pretty meaningless distinction. But it used to actually mean something.

In the early modern period, it was used to describe people who were born peasants, yet had wealth and power to rival the nobility through - that’s right, you guessed it - owning the means of production. “Middle Class” used to be a derisive term the aristocrats used for capitalists. If you presented the modern world to them, they’d say that we were ruled by the middle class – and not in the cutesy way a liberal would mean.

You can trace the EU back to the 1952 coal and steel common market agreement. Hell, the EU does this, EU day is on the day that one was signed, not the actual EU. And it’ll always be that, at heart.

I also think one of the funnier facts about the EU is that all its greatest fans constantly tout the Schengen Agreement as this grand thing, dissolving borders and such. And it is cool, don’t get me wrong, but it also predates the actual EU and isn’t actually linked to the EU.

Currently the world’s superpowers are committing a second Holocaust in Gaza. It’s possible that 500,000 are dead (population was 2.1m before genocide began, Trump said there’s 1.6m in Gaza when negotiating with Israel). The EU is just as complicit in this genocide as the US. That’s just what’s happening now, one of many American atrocities.

With that in mind: what has China ever done in history to make you so much more scared of them?

I don’t disagree that EU and US do terrible things across all over the world. Palestinian genocide is a good example of why the world would be better off if it isn’t ruled by either the US or the EU. But these horrible things will continue to happen without one, two or three global superpower. It’s not like UN is really able to make a difference. The reason I’m more scared for China is not of how they have treated the people in other countries, but how they treat their own people. Do you have an example of how China helped a nation or people in a way that is western countries haven’t?

A lot of people are calling you out over the Uyghur nonsense but this kind of thinking:

I’d rather be a German or Brit and be profiting from Palestinian families being vaporized than be one of those vaporized families. Do think it would be much much better if no family was vaporized.

Is the absolute most monstrous thing that you could be saying. Seriously, imagine saying this about Jews being gassed in the Holocaust, or Black people being enslaved in the Atlantic slave trade. Your wishful thinking means nothing if you’re so caught up in the ideology that makes you think Chinese people will treat you the way your disgusting imperialist states have treated the third world for centuries. Thanks be to God that the world isn’t only populated by settlers who can only imagine things working out as dominators and dominated.

China’s Social Credit System Is Actually Quite Boring: A supposedly Orwellian system is fragmented, localized, and mostly targeted at businesses.

The white supremacist’s greatest fear is that they will be treated as harshly as they have treated others. So they must invent and imagine brutality to fear, justifying their subscription to continued ethnic cleansing against no-whites.

                You need reeducation.

how the state suppresses their people with a social credit system

Lmao. The “social credit system” which literally never existed and even western media admitted was a misunderstanding (there was a credit system in place for scoring businesses which failed to pay debts in time). All the while in the capitalist-imperialist countries, one’s financial credit score determines their ability to buy a house or car.

This level of arrogant-ignorance is something you can only find amongst true Europeans. Even Americans are known to be more critical of their propaganda narratives.

Yea, one is making a MWoG post right now because I dared to state the historical fact that Socialism ended famine in Russia and China, and is defending Ukraine shelling civilians in Donetsk. Very fun people.

At the end, the Soviet Union had enough nukes to wipe out all mammalian life on the planet (and that’s a conservative estimate). But when they finaly collapsed, there was no vindictive strike. Nobody tried to close the book on human history.

In the same position, could the United States ever do the same, when it’s own end comes knocking?

The United States and the USSR both endured(/ing) what could vaguely be described as an Oligarchic coup, which IMO are not likely scenarios to result in a vindictive nuclear first-strike. They are both still imperial powers and too far away for direct conflict. Continuing the dance of proxy wars is still preferable to any nuclear exchange. There are not any countries that are likely to put the US into a China/Taiwan or Russia/Ukraine situation, so the US will probably continue to decline/collapse without the likelyhood of a vindictive nuclear first-strike.

I do have to admit, Trump is a bit of a wild-card, so he might do one anyways, but the ruling class itself would not be interested.

I think the bigger threat would be from whatever military figure happens to be standing next to the button in the aftermath of an all-at-once collapse of legitimacy. I’ve heard stories that evangelical types anxious for apocalypse and rapture like getting assigned to nuclear silos… while I’m not sure how accurate that is, the thought gives me pause.

The current oligarchs? Possibly. Plus I just don’t see American power and wealth decline in a significant way anytime soon legitimately althought the material conditions for the average americans will… But they sure will perceive that their power is declining and idk tbh these people are spite filled. Not thinking in terms of nukes but other means of fuckery

Sorry for the late response 😅

But to put it briefly, I was just kinda fascinated by the Chinese tech scene. Specifically the smartphone market post-2019 huawei ban. That led me into learning about china infrastructure efforts.

I don’t think I’d call myself “pro-china.” I’m not “pro-any country.” But I think that it’s genuinely a pretty neat place I’d like to visit someday.

PS, this video is really fucking cool 😁

All good! Thanks for getting back to me. Yeah the tech scene is one where China’s dominance is undeniable, it went 'China can’t make anything > China can only copy > China must be stealing to get ahead > We have to stop China from innovating"

Even my tech bro workmates recognise that efforts to hold things like DeepSeek and TikTok back are geopolitically motivated

Yes you should be. China’s going to be making lunar and orbital bases and cities and having huge parties they won’t invite you to unless you know the super secret handshake which you only learn after reading Das Kapital in its entirety.

My only respite from this agony is knowing that as a leftist I only have to finish reading Capital. I heard they’re going to make the reactionaries that survive read Hegel in the original German too. Granted a decent percentage of them will already know German but as I hear it even Germans prefer the English translations.

I mean for my part I’m just totally joking. I think it’s all valuable to read when you have the time. I’ll make my jokes about linen here and there, but the last English translation I read of capital was a bit verbose and dated and I think a good bit of praxis would be to simplify it even more for people.

The Chinese aren’t going to be the problem. It will be the American ruling class (and their supporters) that will go deeply reactionary as their global power slips into Chinese hands.

      • In the near term, a lot of products will become more expensive (tariffs, manufactured overseas, etc) as waning American global hegemony no longer can use it’s power to keep foreign countries exports inexpensive. Chocolate and Coffee are a preview of coming attractions.
      • Longer term the US might no longer be seen as a place for International Students and workers. They might go to China instead to study and get jobs. US Citizens might choose to study/work in China too, causing a brain and talent drain from the US.
      • It will be foreign policy where the “Chinese Century” will be felt most directly as they become the new global hegemon. You can already see how this works with their “Belt and Road” initiatives as they now have sizable trade partners around the globe. It also slots well with the overall Chinese strategy of building infrastructure. It also circumvents the US trade hegemony.
      • The Yuan becomes a serious contender for the worldwide Reserve Currency as trade with China booms. This replaces the dominance of the Petrodollar, and is an existential threat to both US soft and hard power.
        • It cripples the US’s ability to unilaterally sanction anybody out of US banking, thus becoming increasingly powerless.
        • It also makes the US’s ability to constantly run deficits much harder as US bonds aren’t sold.
        • Harder to raise deficits to support the US military as it takes up the most of the Federal budget.
          • Expect drastic cuts (like DOGE :melon-musk:) to make way for the military spending to…
          • …prop up the fading global influence militarily, like invading Canada/Greenland a-little-trolling
        • Of everything here this will trigger the largest and deepest period of Reaction because the consequences hit everybody, from the Military, to Politicians and their bureaucracies, Capitalists and their companies, and finally regular grillman Americans.

The US, being the fascist empire it is, will take much of the globe down with it.

If they treat the world like the US did during its century, probably, but so far that doesn’t seem to be the case. They don’t have military bases spread all around the world, they haven’t dropped a single bomb, they have businesses and loans they give out but they don’t force you to have a certain political or economic system (unlike the West which gives their loans with requirements for austerity attached).

I think the only issue is that they seem to be over correcting and are too uninvolved with other countries. So it will probably be fine lol.

From the Chinese? No. From the US/collective west? Very much yes. Our world has not yet experienced an empire falling and being replaced by another empire* in the nuclear age.

*At least not unfriendly empires. The British/French empires would absolutely supplanted by US post WW2 hegemony but as the US was a white supremacist power like them it was more like handing it off to a relative than losing it to a total stranger which is how the racist rage will regard China taking first place. Additionally the interests of the European bourgeoisie were harmonized with US interests. The US in fact saved them from socialism by occupying western Europe and suppressing communists rather than what would have happened had the USSR won all on its own in Europe and then let them have buy-in. Though the Chinese have given western bourgeoisie some buy-in they have zero power unlike in the aftermath of the Europe to US empire transition.

Read somewhere that the dollar being the de facto international currency gave Americans like 30% in purchase power or something like this.
