I think Lucas really excelled when he was pushing against the limits of technology and budget and those limits really held him or n a sweet spot for story telling he would naturally push himself out of.
Anything he makes now would be like the prequels.

Yeah, the films have really dropped off in quality, but I love the TV series and did enjoy the recent Mandalorian film. It didn’t try to stray outside of its lane as a localized Star Wars story and a summer blockbuster.

He had Indiana Jones LITERALLY ride off into the sunset at the end of the third movie. The most over the top cliche thing for a hero to do. And he dragged him back to make another one about aliens. >:(

I’m okay with that for Indiana Jones, because Indiana Jones is Cliche Adventure Man. There have been a lot of Cliche Adventures Man, and Indiana Jones is the Cliche Adventure Man with the highest production value. When Indiana Jones throws a mook off a rope bridge, the filming dummy has electrically powered flailing arms. He punches the bad guy and gets the girl in the end. It’s great!
Right, but George took that away from Indiana Jones. They had him ride off into the sunset, live happily ever after, but no. He was a bankable IP and they wanted more money, despite how it would ruin the ending they already gave to the character

Not OP but while Spielberg directed Last Crusade, the film was written by Jeffrey Boam, George Lucas, and Menno Meyjes. Lucas clearly had a strong influence beyond just the writing as well, judging by things like the R2D2 hidden in the hieroglyphics in the first movie and the Club Obi Wan in the second.
He’s always been a bad director, others make up his slack. He’s a good idea and business man.
seems like this story changes every few years. back in the 90s it was “yeah I got 6 more” and then it was “no I don’t have anything post Jedi” and then he says he does, and then he doesn’t, or then the sequels are about Leia and then they’re not.
People don’t remember their own history very well. Back then, he may have certainly had ideas floating around for more movies, but never considered them “real ideas”
Over time those thoughts turned into real story plots in his head, and it’s perfectly reasonable for him to remember them as being more fully thought out then they were.
I think you’re being a little generous here. He is all over the place over the years, and kind of just doesn’t care. Whatever was the last version of it that flitted through his head was what he’d claim he always intended. Our friend George is also very much NOT a proponent of the death of the author.

He had a bible he gave to Abrams, which was quickly tossed. Then Abrams boasted on his bible, even posting pictures of the old and new cast in a (supposedly) 3-pic story meeting; and then it turned out Abrams’ bible didn’t even exist (exposed by the reaction to Rian Johnson’s turn).

yeah I’ve heard that, but then after suffering through the prequels, and even giving the new movies a chance, I had to hang it up. And I like the clone wars cartoons.
But nah. For me it all goes up on the shelf. I have to evaluate it as a franchise and its just utterly incoherent and more “whyyyyyyy”, over-explained, breaking the suspension of disbelief, rehashed, fan-service, panel tested, corpo-garbage.

I can’t fucking stand Andor, will never understand why such a terrible show gets praise. Gave up after the Heist Arc, which was nothing but a bunch of unlikable twats bitching that Cassian Andor wasn’t one of the cool kids, then they do a long ass marching scene, then they all die. I should have liked their deaths because of how truly disgusting they were, but honestly I felt nothing.
Serious answer: because the point of a prequel is that you have the knowledge of what comes later from having seen the precursor movie(s).

I certainly understand the logic behind watching things chronologically. But, I believe watching them in release order is much better.
Take, as an example, ::: spoiler K-2SO (spoiler below) Doesn’t it make it better you know who K-2SO is when watching Andor, and it’s introduction in S02E08 of Andor hit that much harder already knowing the character?:::
My friend told me to watch Rogue One but I didn’t. Then he told me to watch Andor and I did. It was amazing. So I went ahead and watched Rogue One.
If I had watched Rogue One first, I would absolutely not have watched Andor. It was…ok. The pacing kind of sucked. Way too many characters and you hardly got to know them. Basically all the parts about Star Wars I didn’t like but more serious.
Andor is just a fantastic show in pretty much every way. You can forfet about the Star Wars connection entirety, you don’t need any knowledge of the franchise going in. I highly recommend it to everyone
Dude, Rogue One is SOOO good. Light years beyond the prequels and sequels. I like it better than Return of the Jedi. Jedi has so much silliness and kid stuff that’s nowhere present in R1. R1’s darkness feels like Empire.

I would just say that if someone loves the OT and just wants more of that then R1 isn’t going to make them happy. Honestly TFA is as close as you’re going to get to “more OT but make it fresh”. R1 is more like Star Wars through a completely different lens. Also digital Tarkin sucked. Had they just hired Charles Dance, the Tarkin scenes would’ve been 1000% better. That was as big a miss as not hiring Haley Joel Osmet for TPM.
But if someone loves the Start Wars universe and just wants more interesting things within it, then R1 is the juice. It’s recognizably Star Wars without being too familiar or a rehash of what has been done before.
