Ginkgo trees don’t have flowers. They are gymnosperms like pines, firs, spruces, cedars etc. They produce cones.

Their “fruit” smell like ass though. Not even fruit, just a fleshy pine cone of sorts.

Yeah they actually are not to bad tastewise. Just be sure to use gloves when handling the raw fruits with the stinky flesh around it.

I heard various things about their health benefits. But people seem to agree to only consune small amounts.

No, they surely referred to “college campus” with their comment!
A college campus traditionally refers to the land and buildings of a college or university. This will often include libraries, lecture halls, student centers and, for residential universities, residence halls and dining halls.

Since no one has given you a serious answer yet, Bradford Pears are the type of tree that smells like male ejaculate.

The people I know who say Bradford pears smell awful say they smell like piss, not cum.

All of the people I know who say Bradford smell like piss also have the cilantro tastes like soap gene so I always wonder if the two are related or just a coincidence in the small sample size.

I like cilantro and think Bradford pears have a strong smell like many plants do, but it doesn’t remind me of anything in particular.

No, it’s genetically the offspring of the plant, and contains at least one non-reproductive cell. Pollen produces the male gametes, so the seeds created from it produce the 3rd generation of plant, genetically speaking. (1st gen is pollen producer, 2nd gen is pollen, 3rd gen is seed.) It’s basically an ultra-minimal gametophyte stage.

Some trees are pollinated by beetles, flies, or other insects that might normally be attracted to rotting flesh. As a result, they often emit a more meaty odor. Why cum specifically I can’t say but I think cum has certain organic molecules in common with dead things.

The bleachiness is in the nose, and it’s flourine, which smells very like, but distinct to chlorine, which is in most bleaches.

You detect saltiness with your tongue, not your nose.

I thought this for the longest time until I fell down a rabbit hole a while back. Pollen is literally the tree’s offspring in the form of microscopic plants. When the flowers of a tree are fertilized, the pollen literally grow into the actual reproductive parts of the plant to begin the fertilization process.

The people who owned our house before us planted one in our front yard. We didn’t realize what it was until a couple years after we had lived here and it started sprouting its flowers. Even then it took us a while to realize where that smell is coming from. Now the thing is fucking huge and taking it down would be incredibly difficult and expensive because of where it’s planted. So 3 weeks out of the year we just don’t go outside and keep our windows closed… 😑

P.S. we do not live in the south. I don’t even understand why this thing is here.

Fig didn’t smell like cum, not that I can tell what cum smells like, given that I have been covered in it so much, I can’t smell it at all.

Except for all the cultivars which don’t require pollination to fruit (which are the majority in some parts of the world).

And except for the figs pollinated by wasps who then manage to escape the fig.

We have this other tree that’s grown around here a lot. It has the most beautiful explosion of purple flowers every spring. Then it just smells like cum all day lol

Yeah there was a tree that was flowering for like 3 weeks in june and it made ma want to puke it smelled so bad. Still have no clue what tree it was and it was luckily only where I worked and not where I live. So I did not have to smell it constantly.

If you are here asking: “Is this a science meme?”

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn’t need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn’t a filing cabinet of facts, it’s a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what’s under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged.

See the pinned paper on Shitposting as Public Pedagogy if you want the academic case for why this works.
