For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), the brand-new third entry in the epic sci-fi series from James Cameron. The blue-cat-alien Na’vi return, and this time, a new fire-themed faction is introduced, in contrast to the water-themed faction from the previous film. Once again, they must defend their homeworld from the genocidal campaign of a human army out to strip Pandora of its resources. Expect a whole bunch of fancy effects and a plot that operates on video game logic. This is sure to be one of the biggest hits of the year. A camrip of acceptable has just appeared, so that is what we will watch.

After that is Simon of the Desert (1965), a Mexican religious satire from renowned auteur Luis Bunuel, whose films The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) and The Exterminating Angel (1962) we previously watched. Set in the 4th century, it follows the eponymous Simon’s time atop a column, which he climbed to be closer to God. Unfortunately for him, Satan descends to Earth to tempt him to come back to Earth. Bunuel’s usual skewering of bourgeois respectability follows from there in darkly humorous fashion. This is considered one of his best works, so let’s check it out.
