true collective monoculture was doomed once the internet’s capability for instant communication allowed for on-demand taste atomization and the barrier for entry into the ‘public square’ subsequently disintegrated. The transition of people onto the Internet has been the drawn-out death of that, imo. Monoculture lowkey relies on a work that appeals to/invigorates The General Sensibility, and why would you seek out something that appeals to you less when it’s equally available as everything else is? Niche is no longer synonymous with labyrinthine to access, so culture itself is a bunch of free-floating nodes now, rather than an explicit culture and surrounding countercultures
