I love that people are willing to all individually leave their homes rather than go deal with the source of the problem directly. Americans are such good little piggies they will do anything their overlords demand of them rather than even consider doing something to fix the obvious sources of problems

What do they mean “regulators couldn’t stop them”? I hate how they’re always using this “this is just a situation it is impossible to do anything about, so just accept it” kind of language. “Nope, sorry, data centers are an eternal and perpetual part of the human existence, there is nothing we could possibly do about them except accept sometimes the toxic fumes make your homes completely unlivable.”

Diesel fumes are my worst enemy. I will be hiking two kilometers away from a town generator and catch a perceptible whiff of the stuff carried by the wind. It’s legitimately one of the worst things about living in my patch of the global south, the sheer scale of dirtily burning dirty diesel everywhere. Neighborhood power, rich people fuckoff mansions, giant poorly maintained American truck trucks (not pickups), old boilers, the black smoke from the power station I see every day in traffic, diesel is an inescapable nightmare for me. The smell. The grime! We are not importing clean diesel and all this smoke is extra sooty, and I even wonder if we’ve been getting leaded gasoline. It’s so fucked. Even when the oil and gas industry is having a stable year it’s like this.

Anyway I paid almost an entire fucking months salary on filling my house’s diesel tank a few weeks ago and apparently it went up by almost 20% since only then. Wood stoves are not completely uncommon in rural areas here and even shitty waste firewood is supposedly getting really expensive. What the fuck

Yeah anyway this nonsense data center rollout is gross regardless but I don’t think everyone here appreciates how existentially disgusting living in real life a postwar-dieselpunk society actually is. It’s a fine fuel for many things. We are killing ourselves with it.

One of the reasons I don’t bicycle in vn. Getting stuck behind a dump truck belching black smoke every time it hits the gas is awful.

At least with a motirbike I can eventually get by, I have done some unsafe over/undertaking to get by those guys.

They actually could if they wanted to. Easily in fact. I know it is silly to be mad at them for lying about it but I am still upset

You know that the people in question at best voted to increase funding to the avengers instute. Probably didn’t vote. And there is no more than a 10 percent correlation between whatever people think they are voting for and what politicians do. Don’t blame the lumproles for this one

Sterling is known for their very cheap property taxes, the datacenters subsidize that by quite a bit.

I don’t blame the residents too much, they were the OG place for datacenters, and I swear on everything reddit was astroturfed to hell and called anyone a NIMBY if they complained about datacenters.

They probably didn’t think it’d get so excessive, there’s so many there now, miles upon miles at this point there’s not much else to do in that area.

It always amazes me that no one thinks to mortar one of these places, especially since you’d be long gone before they could trace your location.

Kinda. These folks are part of a recent strip dunking on a character that was misrepresented by a tabloid article. So it’s kind of critical of all the critics. But it gave us this. hahaha

I really dropped off QC after the Dora Tai wedding was entirely and completely focused on Brand New Whimsical Character Anh and it doesn’t shock me in the least that Jeph is still trying to make fetch happen.

My theory is that Jeph wanted to branch off into other narratives, but then his opus, Alice Grove, failed to take off. He wrapped it up quick, and hasn’t really done anything else other than QC since. I think he’s just wrung out at this point and is keeping up with it for the Patreon paycheck. Constantly introducing new quirky characters that don’t really develop or go anywhere for his own flights of fancy, extremely bland backgrounds, basic art errors that never get fixed.

Why the fuck is no one wanting to do anything about this in the material sense? Idk maybe I’m too American for my own good still, but I stg if one gets built close enough that my disabled ass can hobble to it? Hells coming with me. Idk I belive in collective action and trying to get people where I’m at, but I have some hard lines if they happen close enough to me for me to do something about it.

      saving 90% on energy costs

      More like 35%.

That 90% number applies only to the energy used for cooling, which makes up around 30-40% in an air cooled data center.
