I replied to someone saying that the USSR defeated the Nazis saying that it was a group effort. Got into an argument and called a Nazi repeatedly because “I was mad that the USSR defeated the Nazis and hated them for it” which is ridiculous. This isn’t the first time that’s happened on Lemmy. What’s up with that?

I got in an argument because someone there claimed the only reason the holocaust is commemorated is to support zionism and I said that there might be other reasons too to commemorate a genocide. Then I made a negative comment about put in the same thread and it was deleted immediately.

I guess all that lend lease equipment we used to prop up the weak soviet industry had nothing to do with it. They thanked us by making a clone of the B-29.

“Without the machines we received through Lend-Lease, we would have lost the war.” Josef Stalin

“If the United States had not helped us, we would not have won the war. One-on-one against Hitler’s Germany, we would not have withstood its onslaught and would have lost the war. No one talks about this officially, and Stalin never, I think, left any written traces of his opinion, but I can say that he expressed this view several times in conversations with me.” Nikita Kruschev

“People say that the allies didn’t help us. But it cannot be denied that the Americans sent us materiel without which we could not have formed our reserves or continued the war. The Americans provided vital explosives and gunpowder. And how much steel! Could we really have set up the production of our tanks without American steel? And now they are saying that we had plenty of everything on our own.” Georgy Zhukov

        Nice!

You missed raw resources though. Or logistics. Like tires - it was damn impressive when USA packed and shipped and rebuilt (then knows as) Moscow Tire Factory. Or half a million trucks to transport all that food, or iron (Ural), or coal (Azerbeijan or Kazakhstan, don’t remember). Or literal shitton of trains, or rails. Or that 1/3 of explosives that Red Army used was from Land Lease. Or that the land lease food was canned meat and majority of meat soldiers on the front ate. Or that funny thing about octane fuel, where (some models of) Yaks (e.g Yak 9U) would just not run on the domestic low octane fuel, and had to use Land Lease one (other models just got better performance, of about 20%). Oh, and half of the aluminum USSR needed for the tank engines and airplanes.

But you’re spot on with tanks!

They are so weird there. They were arguing that North Korea is definitely not an authoritarian regime and also definitely not starving their citizens or some stupid shit, and one of them started yelling about how I probably believed North Koreans all had the same haircut because of the mainstream media, which I… didn’t, but I said if they did, it wouldn’t be crazy because they have less diverse media to access, but also that wouldn’t have anything to do with why North Korea’s government is bad, but I was just so confused why they were mad about it.

i think you have it the other way around. on reddit bannings are more severe, since you get banned from the whole site. you are facing against a sub mod ban, filters, and then the reddit admin filters too. plus thier shadowbans seems much harder to get around with, unless you are using evasion methods. on lemmy you can get banned bya community, or instance, but still can participate in those communities and instances if you have another account. reddit does IP/fingerprinting bans, as well ashadowbans.

    Yeah. Welcome to lemmy.ml

Many of us just block all the communities of lemmy.ml. this way you are out of reach of the tankie mods.

Unfortunately, lemmy.ml is one of the big instances, so you’re also cutting a big chunk of Lemmy content. But if enough people join the ml boycott (there are already a lot of people that block ml), eventually ml will shrink and other more sensible instances will prevail.

A tankie did. But Lemmy is not a website. You were talking about websites. The website my account is in is lemmy.world. which is not run by tankies. And tankies do not have any moderation power. Why would a non-tankie avoid a website that is not run or moderated by tankies?

I just see a lot of tankies because Lemmy is a federated system, and one of the big instances is controlled by tankies. I can just block that instance’s communities (as I already do) and move on with my life without being fed tankie-curated-and-moderated content.

They are fucking delusional and ignore all evidence that challenges their bizarre viewpoints. When it comes to Russia they are even worse. They are not wrong about Russia doing the heavy lifting in WWII, but they are definitely being assholes about it.

I have found that if u make a legitimate argument backed by facts that are irrefutable, the mod will ban you and delete all your comments for breaking from their echo chamber. Decided to return the favor for their whole instance so I no longer have the misfortune of seeing any of the drivel on their communities. Sucks because there was a couple I enjoyed despite the tankies, but there’s much better alternative communities on other instances that won’t kick u out for having a differing opinion. .ml/hexbear basically = authoritarian cuck, it’s like the communist version of Trump supporters as weird as that sounds.

    https://lemmy.world/modlog?page=1&actionType=All&userId=24410054

If you go to settings you should be able to block an entire instance and then won’t see them on /all

There’s a couple instances that always moderate like that. But you’re better off just hanging out, finding out for yourself, and then blocking what you don’t agree with.

But there’s another that bans people for downvoting AI, but only for a few days so people come back to be trolled. And at least one that bans anyone who tries to take anything seriously.

Stop looking at Lemmy as a single thing, there are dozens of instances acting largely autonomously and if one fucks up, make sure you call out that one and not the entire fediverse.

Ya the guys in Lemmy.ml tend to be pretty weird like that. They aren’t a monolith but in general they tend to think that Russia, China, and North Korea have never done anything bad and that all the evil in the world comes from capitalism in europe and America and that the whole world will be fixed when The Revolution comes. It is all sort of like evangelical Christianity with the numbers filed off, the president of the United States is like an appointed satan (appointed, not elected, they don’t believe elections work/are real in the west) who rules over hell which is the west (sometimes stylized as “Amerikkka”, often accompanied by an American flag emoji with a fire emoji on top of it or a jpeg of a Chinese emperor shooting a fireball), Karl Marx is sort of like Jesus and mao, lenin, Stalin, etc. are the disciples, and The Revolution is the rapture. It is a pretty interesting belief system and I think the .ml guys all mean well, but they can be really difficult to talk to sometimes, as you’ve seen.

Yeah, it’s totally true, everyone knows the only member of the allied forces was actually the USSR. No other country fought against the Nazis, they did completely single handedly, and totally wouldn’t have just sat there and let it happen, if Hitler hadn’t violated their non aggression pact first.

No they didn’t. If a non-aggression pact allowing Nazi annexation of territory is equivalent to an alliance, then France and Britain allied with the Nazis multiple times before the Soviets. There is a reason about how the only non-aggression pact that you hear about is Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and not the Munich Agreements or the Franco-German Declaration, etc. The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact came out of the Soviets being turned down multiple times by France and Britain to forming an anti-fascist alliance.

This is the selective remembrance of appeasement. It is ignored that that encompassed many non-aggression pacts with the Nazis and is only remembered to selectively invoke for war hawking. If we say a nation is evil, than not being on board with a war of aggression is actually evil (Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, etc.) and you are just like Chamberlain, whose only motivation was being a pussy. You can discuss the morality or effectiveness, but Molotov-Ribbentrop was to try to delay the war for preparation and that the Nazis wouldn’t be stupid enough to start a war without their own oil and steel supplies and without preventing a possibility of a two front war with France/Britain, and the Soviets were caught flat-footed because of overestimating the rationality of the Nazis. There was also the worry that France and Britain might eventually join the Nazis since they were pretty vocal about fascism being a possible necessary evil as it is the most extreme form of anti-communism, even though the attempt of appeasement was trying to sit out an eventual war between the Nazis and USSR, since Judeo-Bolshevism was a thing Nazis believed before they even took power.

No. While an utterly shitty PR move for the time, Poland took a 801.5 km2 piece of the highly disputed territory, which was previously in a dramatic tug war between both countries, to a level that Czechoslovakia took it during the Polish-Soviet war.

It shouldn’t have happened, it was an idiotic move for Poland even at the time and played right into Nazi propaganda…

Which you are repeating now, 87 years later. Who says it’s the victors that write history…

It was not “similar to how the Soviets initially split Poland with the Nazis”. Not even close. But UNLIKE Russia (that considers itself seemlingly the heir to the USSR), Poland history and multiple figures acknowledged that it was stupid and shameful.

No, the USSR did agree to take Eastern Poland in Molotov-Ribbentrop, but they did wait until after the Nazis took the western part before starting their invasion. A combination of waiting to see if Poland could fight off the Nazis, meaning that they didn’t have to worry about further Nazi expansion, and after that moving the border west to provide more territory needing to be taken in an eventual war with Germany.

Secret protocol agreement may have existed, or the forgery backed up by 1990s Russia cozying up to west and joining Stalin derangement syndrome unanimity.

Still, the USSR did not encourage/applaud a nazi controlled Warsaw, and weather Germany could take entire country or not, would have been easier to buy tolerance for nazi controlled Warsaw. Requiring a defensive buffer proved prescient. “If you want a pact, accept us taking Warsaw”

              • “May have existed”?

Molotov himself inadvertently implied their existence numerous times in his conversations with Chuev (Molotov Remembers; Molotov-Chuev interviews between 1970-1986, published 1993).

Khrushchev acknowledged their existence in his memoirs, which nobody disputes the provenance of, and which were published in the West in the 1970s.

The CPSU itself acknowledged their existence at the end of 1989, and published their copy of the text in their official journal.

The literal Soviet documents, held by the General Department of the CPSU Central Committee, were located after the archives were declassified in 1992, and have since been published widely.

No party seems to dispute the existence of the secret protocols. If you have a single credible source that does, feel free to cite them.

Ok. Very likely existed. I was unaware of Kruschev/Molotov acknowledgements. Doesn’t affect modern nazi mischaracterization that pact, even with that compromise, constitutes any semblence of an alliance between the 2 powers.

While it is not justifying it, but is that really a major distinction. The purpose of several previous non-aggression pacts was to sign off on Nazi territorial annexation (again, selectively remembered with appeasement) of saying “it is okay to take the Sudetenland” and “We wont use the Anschluss as a Causus Belli”. The reason the Soviets took the eastern part of Poland was to push the border west and that they felt that they could justify this by the fact that it was part of the Russian Empire and Soviet Russia during the revolution and that it was lost to get peace in WW1. That does not justify it, just that any talk about the Soviets, rather than France and Britain, being more compromised and accommodating to the Nazis or that the Soviets were more pro-Nazi than the West is demonstrably wrong and rewritting history for cold war reasons.
