Funny thing is that it is literally impossible to take someone else’s job. You cannot, for example, go into a place of business with a gun and order someone to give you a job and then actually expect to work there. Jobs have to be given. And that’s where the real problem lies, but god forbid society ever acknowledges it.

Or to put it another way, if these immigrant-blamers had even a fraction of this contempt for those actually guilty, cheapskate employers so desperate to avoid paying a living wage to the people they rely on for services that they willingly drive down standard of living for all, the world would be a vastly different place and immigrant vs. non-immigrant would make no difference whatsoever.

There is more than enough on this planet to go around and have lots left over. The problem is that it’s been rigged for so long that wealth only ever flows upward now, not across and certainly not downward.

In Australia we have a huge problem with immigrants. It started about 300 years ago when a bunch of English people came. They brought war, disease, and drugs, and they refused to assimilate into the local culture. They imported invasive new animals that fouled up the water, and they fenced off the transit system.

If you’re thinking of moving to Australia, then you are welcome here, but please learn a bit of the local language and don’t just speak English. Attend a welcome to country. And don’t drive a car! It’s terrible for the environment!

What I don’t understand is why corporate America is against immigration. So many big businesses rely on the cheap, willing labor of immigrants.

They aren’t. However, they need to blame someone for the ills of society that they cause by taking all our money, to make us angry at the wrong people and let them keep taking all our money. So they choose immigrants, because xenophobia is a natural human emotion and easy to exploit.

Corporations and ice goal not to deport all the labor they are the whip to make sure the labor doesn’t get ideas about joining unions and reporting exploitation. It would be pretty easy to fine and close down businesses who hire illegals but they dont.

Companies will be for or against something based on how they think ti will impact their profitability. Tech companies are very much for more immigration of HB1 visa, and guest-worker programs, and all that that allow them to suppress wages because the immigrant will take less pay for the same job than an American citizen would.

There is a lot of guest worker programs in tourism/season economies, for example. Where almost all the base level labor is foreign workers who are paid below minimum wage.

The thing is, they aren’t against immigration, but there’s another kind that let’s them exploit workers more. I think it’s the H-2A visa that there was a recent case over, and basically it’s decided they can be treated essentially like slaves, maybe even worse than slaves were sometimes treated.

The way the visa works, from what I recall, is that they can only stay in the country while their employer allows them and employs them. This means they can’t negotiate for higher pay, or anything else. The employer, in some cases, will feed them almost nothing (one case I think they were feeding them one bologna sandwich a day). IIRC, there are companies who control them, and they loan them out to other companies for labor. It’s not technically slavery, but it’s practically the same.

They want to deport people who aren’t working under this visa so they can have bring in people under the much more exploitative one.

I LOVE having immigrants around me, they add so much more flavor and life to the neighborhood, and the world.

Imagine if everybody was just a White Christian? I’m white, and I’d hate that as much as anyone else.

    There are two things:

    1. White-owned corpos see hispanic-owned businesses earning revenue they’d rather be receiving themselves

    2. People imagine it’ll be mostly men affected, and men (who call the shots) see that as less competition for finding partner(s)

all for immigration, heck even dissolving all nations, but anecdotally my neighbors are shitheads. hoarding and filling right up to the property line. would be fine except that it’s small engines air compressors and impact wrenches.

and my house is four feet away, loud. and they don’t care.

but the other immigrants down the road are beautiful and wonderful kind people.

i just wanted to bitch about my asshole neighbors living the american dream.

Heh. I know the feeling. Neighbours are a matter of luck. I am lucky that the only loud sounds I hear from my current ones, right outside my window when I’m at my desk, is laughter and screaming from all the kids coming over to swim in their pool. It’s been interesting hearing them get older as time goes on.

They haven’t even started playing loud music as they get into their teens! Great neighbours.

Previously, though, when I lived in a flat, my neighbour told me he might stab me.

      So, y’know, luck.

The most virulently anti-immigrant I’ve ever known where older first-gen immigrants, who had particular IRE toward newcomers of their own ethnicity in particular. And they voted for Trump proudly and loudly.

But a lot of white liberals just seem to think anti-immigration is exclusive to the white working-class, hence why they get all upset when non-whites don’t vote for pro-immigration candidates.

The benefits of immigration are easy to see on a personal level, the right-wings negatives are discussed more broadly on an aggregate level – and some of those points have some merit, though they can often be addressed by having managed immigration and are mostly negatives in terms of unchecked/unlimited migration flows.

I can’t help think that posting this sort of thing in a neoliberal thread, where the post’s implying it wants some discussion, is just an overt and silly trap for any actual discussions on the topic though.
