Sometimes I get worried that when I draw a character/caricature it doesn’t look anything like the original, but if I’m having a crisis of artistic confidence I just need to look at your average political cartoonist’s work and feel better.

Surprised he didn’t label everyone with a shirt with their name on it, just that one guy.

Yeah, I generally don’t dump on people’s art graphics (it’s better than I could ever manage), but this is so bad that it obfuscates its message and I honestly cannot tell if this is for or against Hasan and El-Sayed

I don’t just go out of my way to insult someone else’s work directly, but sometimes it’s nice for me to have a reminder that the difference between a successful artist and an unsuccessful one is just luck and “networking” not actual skill or hard work.

Political caricatures make everyone hideous, they’re not trying to say ugly people are bad. It’s not like modern political comics where you make your side into gigachads

Hakeem Jeffries apparently is just Obama with big eyebrows (although in the cartoonist’s defense, it’s a hard to make a caricature of someone with no personality)

Al Sayed never even claimed to be a DemSoc, Hasan supported and still supports him based on standard electoralism logic, but god damn I wish these people would figure out that nothing is ever or will ever be enough to satisfy the so-called “moderates” because what they really want is a reactionary government that they don’t feel morally culpable for.

I can’t believe a twitch streamer has become the bane of DNC’s existence. I can since US is an influencer-based economy and it’s not unique in that. But it’s so stupid.

Let’s be real, the reality of the situation is in the other direction, the DNC establishment has made itself perfectly clear they are not gonna tolerate the socdem insurgency for much longer

The DNC in the eyes of the donor class dropped the ball on this recent DSA-esque surge of demsocs and socdems and they realize their number one left bashing argument that actually has social and political weight among the masses: Electability, that old reliable knockout punch for every single left tendency over the last 80 years, is about to take a massive blow, assuming the midterms actually pan out the way the polls claim

The establishment couldn’t dogpile the socdem candidates too hard without alienating the libs (which is why they went after Piker) but once the midterms are over, 2027 will play host to the greatest neoliberal media counteroffensive in modern political history and I doubt the DSA, Hasan Piker or even the newly elected candidates will weather it intact. The DSA was simply too timid, they had so much more capacity but they played it safe, they needed at least double the elected candidates if they wanted to survive the coming blitz

If el sayed gets that W then I’m so deeply curious what they’ll say without electability being so easy to flaunt around. They’ve reneged in LGBT, abortion, healthcare, climate change, everything. If it’s popular they don’t like it. If it’s good they don’t like it. Zorhan does stuff like make sure water fountains work and all they can ask is if he likes Israel.

Is there a single thing in the country that Dems are going to do a counteroffensive on that isn’t going to sound completely detached?

I believe the DNC will turn Islamophobia into the new “trans panic” playing into Republican framing, they’ll make the calculation that demoralizing the base over this would be worth it since they can just replay the old “Vote Blue No Matter Who” strategy for 2028, using Trump’s unprecedented historic unpopularity in 28’ as the catalyst

They’ll also target the weak links of the broader movement, like AOC, hammering her until she drops out of 28’ consideration or turns the base against her when she (quite likely) bends to their framing and demands

The DNC consultants aren’t as dumb as they sometimes appear, they know the left’s weakness, it’s sectarian and racial pressure points, they’ll spend all of 2027 throwing everything at the broad and unfortunately due to the left’s lack of discipline, alot of it will stick, hell some of these agitprop campaigns will stick so hard it’ll likely trigger struggle sessions even on this site (lemmy)

I’m not sure I’m getting the full picture though. The cudgel was like “we can’t run popular ideas, they’re not electable like kinda-republican purple candidates are!”

But then theoretically El-Sayd wins, right? People love Mamdani, they’d love El-Sayd.

Then someone else comes along and campaigns on the idea of trying to make tomorrow better than today instead of the opposite, right?

What’s the Dems’ radical response? “We can’t elect them because they’ll be soft on Islam”? I feel like a Republican is an existential threat. You can’t explain the ratcheting mechanism of a two party system because it’s all nerd shit. But what is Islamaohobia compared to healthcare and gas prices? “We know it’s electable and we know it’ll make life better, but it’s not racist enough”? Seems like a really unraveled response.

But then again, they can’t do something new because politics is nerd shit, people aren’t educating themselves, and dema need to be understood anyway. But what ridiculous spin you’d have to have when people care about treats

The situation of dems losing the electability argument was in the minds of the socdems supposed to be the catalyst that triggers a grand return of Keynesianism and social democracy in the United States; AOC will become president, the New New Deal will be passed and Republicans and centrists won’t even be elected dog catcher…etc.

The problem of course is that’s pure utopianism, Keynesianism is dead and is never coming back, neoliberalism was specifically designed to kill it, historical social democracy was a temporary contingent set of policies that only came about due to post-war conditions and a strong communist alternative in the world, and likewise isn’t coming back

The institutions of this country and it’s military apparatus will not at the end of the day allow a socdem insurgency to take over the federal government, that would be like saying the CIA will become friendly to leftists, it’s ludicrous

Instead the socdems in their idealist drive COULD HAVE triggered a rupture of the two party system, a collapse of it’s legalistic norms and the mass radicalization of tens of millions of former dems and more importantly the activation of non-voters into a third party system that could’ve emerged as a result of the rupture. But the DSA and it’s socdem allies were simply too timid this election cycle, this was the last chance, they needed to win far more seats than they’re about to win to trigger the rupture and the candidates needed to be sightly less socdemy that they are. Zohran was supposed to be the mediocre archetypical example of this new breed of unintentional rupturers, instead he’s the “gold standard”, the pedestal, the idol, the one they all get compared to, THE CEILING, that’s not enough, they needed new candidates who could make him look like the left liberal he is

As a result instead of a rupture, we’re gonna get a one-sided purge, aside from leaning into Islamophobia, I don’t pretend to know the specific ways the DNC will utilize to purge the party, in the end they may take this outside the arena of electoralism and into the realm of state violence, trumped up charges of supporting terror and arrest them, if the base is traumatized and demoralized, the DNC will respond with “who cares, what are they gonna do”? Vote for republicans or another George Floyd scale rebellion? They know how to defeat those threats

All I know is, 2027 will be ugly for the left

I think that’s Jeffries, not Obama in the cartoon (he clearly just slapped big eyebrows on the standard high-cheekbone elf-ear Obama caricature).

That, or he put Obama in a cartoon about congressional elections instead of the house dem leadership. Hard to say.
