Just horrible.
“Unprecedented”
Hasn’t something similar already happened earlier this year?
Fucking western “journalists”. I know lying in service of capital is the job but they used to at least pretend it wasn’t.
It’s not even a rare occurrence, and the whole “painlessness” of it is controversial at best, it’s just that they paralyze the recipient first so there’s no way to tell.
It’s fucking bullshit what they use, potassium chloride. It causes cardiac arrest. Like if you’re gonna have the death penalty, at least give people heroin and as much whiskey as they want.
No potassium chloride was used, that’s probably why the execution failed. They only used pentobarbital which is usually used as a sedative before the potassium chloride.
Yeah, it’s baffling how the state is so incompetent it can’t even kill people right. Just use a gigantic dose of fentanyl.
Another reason I will never support the death penalty.
certainly not in a capitalist country
If the governor is able to completely halt death row murders, then they are personally liable for every single one of those murders when they don’t.
This governor actually approved the attempted execution before it happened, her lawyers were appealing it and he personally said he agreed with the original sentencing and forced it to happen anyway. The only reason he is stopping it now is because they fucked it up and couldn’t successfully murder her and it would have been too scandalous to let them keep trying and failing to kill her
I feel like if you survive a lethal injection they have to let you go. Double Jeopardy or something.
That’s what they used to do with hangings in England iirc, I believe if you survived the hanging you just had your sentence commuted to transportation to Australia
Edit: there were also cases of people being let got after surviving execution attempts, usually failed hangings. Sometimes the justification was religious (“clearly God doesn’t want them hanged, who are we to argue?”) and other times it was legalistic (“well they were sentenced to hang so I guess the sentence was already carried out, let 'em go boys”)
i believe thats totally correct which is why the phrase hanged until dead was born.
idk what kind of condition she’s in, death might be more preferable. It’s so fucked up and tragic.
Executing someone in 2026 for a crime that was committed in 1995 is bizarre to me.
I guess it’s the cruelty is the point kind of deal
delays and appeals. could just not execute people because the country was pretty stable but noooo
pokemon was released in 1996
I oppose the death penalty generally, but lethal injection in particular is incredibly cruel. It’s designed to prevent the appearance of suffering, but not the experience - people who have survived botched “lethal injection” have described it as excruciating. Honestly a firing squad would be far better.
It’s so insane that they managed to botch such a high-profile execution.
Also, for context for people who aren’t aware, Pike requested execution by firing squad or hanging instead because of her PTSD from
CSA
rape as a child
Psychiatrists said that lethal injection would likely mean that she’d spend her last moments feeling like she was being
CSA
raped to death
Death to amerikkka immediately. Fucking hell.
Edits: tried to figure out how spoiler tagging works on Lemmy, idfk, feel free to explain how I should’ve formatted this if it’s not displaying correctly.
If you want to do nested spoilers, only the actual end of the spoiler should have :::
Right now you have spoiler and then immediately after :::, which ends the first spoiler warning. It should look more like
spoiler
::: spoiler CSA *removed*Psychiatrists said that lethal injection would likely mean that she'd spend her last moments feeling like she was being::: spoiler CSA
*removed*d to death
:::which gives you:
CSA removed
Psychiatrists said that lethal injection would likely mean that she’d spend her last moments feeling like she was being
CSA
removedd to death
They weren’t meant to be nested spoilers, they were meant to be two separate spoilers. I was looking for something like how
||spoiler||works on Discord or!spoiler!<works on Reddit, like a small bit of text that is obscured within a larger context. Annoying how Markdown doesn’t seem to have a standard way of doing spoiler text.Spoiler blocks aren’t defined by CommonMark so everyone kinda just does their own thing.
If you’re going to make capital punishment legal in your country (something I do not support any nation doing tbc) at least have the strength of your convictions and the tiniest bit of consideration and go with a method that’s impossible to fuck up. A firing squad, for example.
She apparently requested firing squad or hanging multiple times
it feels like a money thing, like an excuse one time was “well we dont want the drugs going to waste!”
I have some ideas about good uses for them.
They won’t use “humane” executions like guillotine or firing squad because they are messy. They do lethal injection because it looks “peaceful” so everyone can feel good about themselves afterwarsa
Comments in the midwest.social post on this were absolutely vile.
Moderators exposingfash cm0002 cm0002
Well, yeah.
Idk what’s worse, the amount of accounts they use to spam or the amount of comms people have them moderating
Remarkably incompetent.
There is also no way she would have been convicted to death if she had had better legal counsel
I’m reminded again of the Jacob Geller video essay on the topic. I honestly don’t know how else to CW this one because it’s absolutely terrifying. I’d appreciate more concise suggestions.
CW: execution, murder, bodily harm, drugs, torture
Jacob Geller
Not related to your point (I’ve seen that video as well) but credible SA allegations have surfaced against him in the last 24 hours or so
Oh heck, I haven’t even heard of that. Do you have a source?
He was accused of SA a day or two ago, then people found records that he was suspended from UNC for a semester for SA.
The gaming media outlet he’s a part of has also let him go.It’s still developing right now, the first person to bring the allegations wasn’t the victim and they deleted their original post (might also have been a right wing grifter? Some conflicting info going around). Geller hasn’t responded at all. It’s not totally set in stone but it looks pretty bad.
Thank you for this!
I’ve seen the right wing grifter theory as well in my quick search just now. Let’s see how it develops, this really does look bad.
He admits to doing it.
Well fuck that sucks (that he did not that he seems to be taking ownership of his actions).
It’s a better statement than I have seen from many others that have done this but damned if I will ever be sharing his content again.
Agreed. Makes me feel bad for bringing up the video in the first place, despite it being relevant. Should I delete it?
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
