There’s 2 main categories of troops: those who join due to poverty/lack of opportunities and those who join to legally kill people. The latter group can be further divided into those that are open about it (they’ll just admit they want to kill people) and those who aren’t (the ones that say they joined “for the adventure/to do cool stuff”)

Anyone interested in WW1 history should read Poilu: The World War 1 Notebooks of Corporal Louis Barthas Barrelmaker 1914—1918. It’s a first hand account by a French socialist who spent almost the entire war in the trenches. He basically spends the entire book criticising rampant militarism, the jingoistic newspapers, and bloodthirsty officers.

Here’s one of my favourite passages:

I know this isn’t the point but if he actually read the Bible he would know rich men don’t go to heaven. Jesus was pretty clear about that. If a rich man wants to go to heaven step one is not being rich. They can bs all they want about how the camel through the eye of a needle bit was a metaphor, it refers to a literal gate, blah blah blah but it’s very cut and dry. If you are rich and want to go to heaven you must sell what you have and give to the poor.
