Badlands and Toad Hall announced over the weekend that use of the controvresial technology would end for now.
Why would any bar use any kind of face scanning tech?
CCTV cameras are everywhere, as are doorbell cameras and all the rest. Any of those that gets in the hands of authorities, which is almost all of it, they run facial recognition on. It’s been like that for a very long time, although facial recognition was virtually worthless for a long time but in the last 15 years has improved remarkably but still lacking.
There was a spate of long time fugitives that were busted like whitey bulghar whatever that boston gangster The Departed was loosely based off of, were caught. I believe that was the point they improved the tech to a large degree. It’s better with white people than minorities, or at least was because it was trained on more white faces.
Just repeating an arguement I have seen:
There are always troublemakers, especially so at gay bars. An automated ID system allows for instantly detecting and ejecting them. Without the automated system, you have to get all of the bouncers across all of the bars to somehow share ID of the bad actors, which is hard, so people can slip through.
Whether that justifys risking leaking the identities of all of the legit patrons, I dunno, but clearly some of the bars thought so…
That is the ad hoc argument to justify doing this, obscuring the real purpose.
If your trying to insinuate that a bunch of gay night club owners are somehow data harvesting for big AI, then all I have to say is that the simplest answer is usually the correct one. Not everything is a big conspiracy.
All cctv cameras are connected to facial recognition, a lot of doorbell and civilian ones too, in case you have been living in a news free bubble for the past 20 years.
And AI is the new sticker they slap on those exact same systems. Its just marketing.
The objection people had to the system was the facial recognition system, not the AI part. Whether its classic face recognition or AI recognition, no one wants to be tracked going into a nightclub, especially if they may not be publically out of the closet.
I’ll make it very easy for you, no it doesn’t justify that. Nothing justifies that.

We all laughed at ‘Will Smith’ sloppily devouring spaghetti. We scoffed at old people ‘amen’-ing various iterations of crustacean-Jesus, and mocked the bizarrely-handed monsters that supposedly would put artists out on the street.
…But this. This actually scares me on an existential level. This is disgusting and terrifying.
We live in a time where your face can be stolen with a click, nothing seen can be believed, and Nvidia chips are powering automated murder-drones.

Why the fuck would a gay bar think face id tech would be a-okay with their customers?
Those bars should be boycotted permanently. Drive them out of business. Refuse any new bar that opens in that spot too. Make it clear that shit won’t be tolerated.
This is it. This is the stupidest thing I heard all week. And, we all know what a week it’s been.

They already have facial ID at these bars, in the streets, everywhere. It’s the AI assisted part that is in question here.
But I agree, not just at gay bars we shouldn’t have facial recognition unless under very strict rules preventing surveillance of anyone that there is no warrant to surveil as such. Judicial warrant, I guess I have to say that now because they started calling police requests as administrative warrants to trick people and muddy the waters.
Just like they did with calling less lethal ammunition less than lethal. Or with changing a grand jury from a safeguard from unjust prosecution into a tool of persecution.
Yes, not just gay bars, but especially gay bars, of all places.
Not sure whether this is favoured here but I am thinking that some of you might appreciate some positive news, too.
I wouldn’t call this positive exactly. It’s more ominous. It’s really disturbing that happened in the first place, it’s very disturbing that they clearly want to try it again.
There needs to be some kind of process like an intervention where people get introduced to what big data has already done.
With modern storage and compression techniques companies might be storing the data those bars already gathered for years before the facial recognition gets to the point where even crappy, out of focus face partials are good enough to identify a person and connect them to a database.
