I think competitive pvp games are not the majority of the industry. I also think that this only really seems to apply to shooters, and I think I could get even more granular by saying shooters targeted at dudes, because it doesn’t really apply to the Overwatch community for example, it doesn’t apply to the FGC (anymore) and it doesn’t apply to Splatoon, all are pretty competitive. It applies to the dude shooters for masculine manly boys that break their controllers.

It made me feel so old when I booted up a pirated copy of Minecraft for the first time in years (Microsoft stole my legitimately purchased account) and was overwhelmed by all the additions. I used to just dig a big hole & use those materials to build a castle, rinse and repeat until I had a few bases to build rail network around. The last time I played was right around when they added the end so I ended up completely lost in all the new stuff. Maybe it makes sense if you played consistently & got drip fed the updates but there was just so much to do

My personal theory is that this fits a general trend of people shifting to games as their entertainment of choice because of financial considerations. Games have a high roi? in the sense that the amount of entertainment time you get out of a game is significantly higher than say going to eat out or to a movie (if you don’t pirate, and if you do pirate games are still a low cost way to be entertained minus the initial cost of the electronic device you use).
I’m also fully in this camp. Culture is downstream of the economic base, right now our economic base favors cheap, digital, easily-available entertainments, which unfortunately are very often isolating and exploitative in their own ways.
