I don’t think this is real, mostly because I don’t think PETA has a sense of humor. I don’t think they’re capable of funny.

“Name one cow you’re friends with” is such as asshole response to an industry that sometimes treats animals worse than Nazi concentration camps.

I’ve been seeing vegan defenders get upvoted in recent time on lemmy, did something change? I remember vegans getting quite negative feedback a few months ago only

The way you ask this makes me think you are a troll that wants to pick a fight.

Just in case you are not a troll: “vegan defenders” and “vegans” are no homogenous groups. There are a lot of different individuals that are vegan. And they do this for a bunch of different reasons.

Also your “vegan defenders”: Defending against what? This implies that there are people who think veganism should be eradicated. This would be an extremly stupid opinion to have. You don’t have to be vegan yourself but at least let other people live their life.

I honestly was being a bit of an ass for no reason, I do apologise. I’m a vegan myself, but only converted a few months ago. I’m just now depressed when I see how negatively people comment on anything vegan online, and spread misinfo frequently. Also I should’ve said “vegan-ism defenders”

People get paid a salary by meat/dairy industries to go online and astroturf against veganism. Its just part of being vegan online

I don’t know about online, but in my day to day life most people who talk shit about vegans are exactly the sort of people you’d imagine; edgelords who think masculinity is congruent with being a dick.

FWIW I’ve come across multiple “PETA is the punchline” memes on Lemmy over the past few days, after having seen none that I remember. Not to jump to conclusions or claim conspiracy but I had already noted it to myself earlier today. I concur, the way some people approach the subject can be very depressing.

Idk probably just a lot of the damage that has been done by anti-PETA propaganda. Those people are probably real people seeing PETA being brought up again and remembering “oh yeah, here’s people we can all unanimously shit on!” Because PETA was always a joke even in most progressive circles.

I’m not saying there isn’t a conspiracy, but just that it seems more likely that when one person posts about something that a lot of people can have a negative opinion on and they feel comfortable sharing it? They’ll take the opportunity to do so.

Nonsense. There’s incontrovertible evidence that 2.4 million years ago, the non-human creatures on our family tree were already smarter than any non-human animal roaming the earth today.

Vegans will have history side with them. However, farming and pastoralism is a way of life for many people. It’s a job passed down from generation to generation. It’s one of the world’s oldest job. Unlike fossil fuels where there is no sentimental attachment and we can tell people to reskill, farming isn’t. Some cultures and communities centre their identity to farming and pastoralism. How do we convince farmers and herders to give up the practice because it is extremely damaging not just to the environment, but to the entire human species?

Even though farmers do worry about the climate change making seasons becoming less predictable and yields becoming less productive, they are also the same people who complain and felt hindered by climate change policies, so they vote for the right wing parties that provide easy answer band aid solutions, but have far more dire and longer term consequences.

Blame capitalism as much as we want, but in this case it isn’t some nebulous boogeyman. Who are the people supporting capitalism? Who are the people selling meat to the meat industry? The same people who I am talking about. There is naïveté that farmers don’t have a hand in exacerbating climate change. Holistically, we are all to blame.

I stopped eating almost any beef after discovering the cute cow gifs subreddit. They can be so puppy like! They’re also huge methane machines and having fewer cows would be good for the environment.

On the other hand, I crave a good pot roast maybe once a year.

Edit: and I can name my mother’s favorite childhood cow and the cow my grandpa let me name because we shared a birthday.

Cows when young are absolutely puppy like. We had a pet calf when I was a kid named Softy. My stepmom insisted we buy him and bring him home when we visited a rural county fair because he was so cute. He ended up thinking that he was one of our dogs for a while, even played fetch (poorly heh). Once he got big (and admittedly mean as hell), someone ended up stealing him from his pasture while we were away for the day. Poor Softy.

Maybe we should have a specific holiday like Thanksgiving but for cows. I vote for St Patrick’s Day. Beyond meat and black beans are cool and good but you can pry corned beef out of my cold dead fingers.

I unfortunately like beef too much. But I know the impact the meat industry has and try to reduce my intake. I was down to two meals with meat a month before I got a job that wouldn’t let me be picky.

I actually have reduced my beef consumption quite a bit. More for my personal health reasons than any other reason though.
