The left-right spectrum makes less sense to me by the day.

However, I personally define tankies as authoritians who do some mental gymnastics to think that a benevolent “socialist” dictatorship equates to control of society by the workers. (It obviously doesn’t. A dictatorship by a minority is exactly that)

Anyone who defines North Korea as socialist needs to reconsider their political positions, in my opinion.

Just because they’re in opposition to the capitalist South Korea and the worst imperialist nation in the world, the USA, doesn’t mean you need to stand behind the North Korean regime…

I suppose we just enjoy different things about Star Wars then, for me it’s all about the world building, and seeing how characters act within it, the battles and action are just a climax to everything else (I feel this way about all sci-fi and fantasy).

Not saying you only watch it for the battles, but I do mostly watch it for the talking haha

It’s why I still very much enjoy the prequels, despite them being pretty shoddy on the plot (Anakin’s fall could have been written soooo much better written it hurts. Probably would have needed an extra movie to really sell it though. The Clone Wars TV show episode where Tarkin and Anakin meet for the first time was great if I recall correctly. It made kinda make sense why Anakin bought into fascism in the end.)

To me there’s no such thing as a food sci-fi and fantasy without politics (in the sense that there’s some disagreement which motivates people). More trade disputes and blockades please, less holdo maneuvers that break existing rules of the world. The holdo maneuver would have been great to destroy the Death Star with some Kamikaze X-Wings jumping to hyperspace through it…

The battles, to me, are only interesting if one fleshes out the world and the political disagreements.

I once started watching a Chinese fantasy show (was learning Chinese, and like sci-fi/fantasy) and it opened with a 10 minute battle, no context. Immediately turned it off, like why do I care, show?

tl;dr of my response: China ain’t Socialist, and shouldn’t be emulated in our struggle for socialist revolution worldwide.

Many leftists don’t consider China and the CPC to even be socialist, many socialists around the world see the CPC as a ruling class of another capitalist country, albeit with much higher rates of nationalised industries.

We think you can’t really call yourself socialist when the workers don’t have meaningful democratic control over society. And unless you’re being dishonest or are just misinformed, the workers most certainly don’t have control of society in China. Less so then here (Australia), even.

One only need to talk to people in China to realise this, most people I’ve spoken to in China, even though who support the government, describe a very hierarchical benevolent government.

One simply can’t look a lefty in the eye and say China is socialist, unless those “Chinese Characteristics” suffixed to “Socialism” simply stand for “without democracy”.

There is no meaningful method to agitate for political change (no, being in one of the other parties most certainly doesn’t count), there are no workers unions (strikes are heavily repressed and the only union that exists is controlled by the CPC, though despite that some groups of workers still sometimes bravely strike 💪) no freedom of political association, no democracy in the workplace.

It’s really hard to claim China is socialist, yet people outside of China still do, just because they’re holding the banner of socialism…

I don’t hate China, it’s a pretty nice place, with lovely people, and certainly a nicer place than the shithole of the US. I’ve been to China multiple times, and you wouldn’t catch me dead in the US.

But they just ain’t Socialist, and shouldn’t be emulated in our struggle for revolution worldwide.

The only part I dislike about this, is that I can’t find on their website what portion of the $10 you pay will go to building something on the land.

If you keep capitalism no amount of political donation/lobbying regulation will ever fix the problem. The problem being that having money affords you influence, even without donating directly to political parties, or by lobbying and legally bribing politicians with cushy jobs after they leave politics.

The goal would be to make it so the politicians can only game for votes from the people.

If we allow wealth to be amassed and concentrated in the hands of a few (who extracted that excess value from the workers who actually produced it), we hand control of the economy, and thus society to an unelected oligarchy.

If you control the wealth of a nation, including capital, you control the workers who are economically forced to work for you, as they lack enough money to compete with you.

When you control the capital, you decide what projects are invested in, you can influence elected bodies to bend over backwards for you with tax reductions (see, Amazon and basically getting cities to bid for them to locate parts of their business there).

And oh so much more that I am too inarticulate to make concise here.

You can’t regulate your way to capitalism working, since the profit motive will always work to undo them (see the fact that Anti-Trust is barely being enforced anymore in the US, and the rest of the world generally)

I somewhat echo you feelings on ignorance and “China bad!”, but definitely do not agree with the characterisation of China as a “proletariat government”.

The workers do not have meaningful democratic control over society in China, and to claim they do requires some next-level mental gymnastics.

If one believes in control of society by the workers, as socialists ought to by definition (at least, by my understanding), one really ought not tout China as a government to emulate…
