Guys! If we donate all our RAM then Sam will be able to build the AI that will destroy our civilization even sooner.

I’m thankful I rebuilt my rig during the incredibly brief period during COVID where RAM was cheap as chips and mid tier GPUs were under $500.

Outside of Fallout and KCD2, I don’t play anything graphically intensive, so hopefully I’m good for another 5-10 years.

Wishful thinking, I know. But I’ve had periods where I simply didn’t have a gaming box that could run new hotness so I ignored the industry.

Got a lot of reading done. Maybe this is for the best.

i also bought two gaming rigs and a small home server in the time between crypto and ai, so i think it was a good time. unfortunately i had a huge storage fallout this year in the server. no data is lost due to redundancy, but i can’t rebuild it because the seller returned me the original price as warranty…

I did mine end of 2021/beginning of 2022, these days I actually use my LCD steam deck for most everything and even then I’ll often stream from my desktop. Right now I’m on a morrowind kick so playing a nearly 25 year old game, deck handles openmw and mods amazing.

I have a huge backlog already so don’t feel compelled to buy a lot of new stuff and I’m just not keeping up with what’s hot anymore. I have other hobbies than gaming as well, other reason I’ve really liked having the steam deck is it’s easy to pause and come back later if you want.

I sold an arm and a leg to do a build this year, accepting the cost because it’s probably the last one I’ll ever be able to do and if I didn’t strike I now it wouldn’t be an option at all soon

We have allowed these tech-bro fascist retards to control every aspect of our digital lives, plunging us toward an anti consumer subscription model for every digital commodity, stripping us of autonomy and agency as a consumer.

Slightly unrelated, but the most disturbing part of 1984 for me was that the protagonist had to buy a blank notebook as contraband and use a blind spot in his apartment to write in it.

Why can there be no peer to peer sharing of hardware on which people run AI? Decentralize it, no tech CEO clowns needed.

That is for generating images. Pretty useless. Was thinking along the lines of science, research and medicine.

Because typically the resources for a particular AI job need to be centralized in order to obtain usable speeds. Even a machine with a decent 16GB GPU is going to lose speed swapping in and out of system RAM - though it does allow for larger models - so machines in a LAN can’t currently split the workloads without significant efficiency losses. It’s also why AI boards are typically using soldered LPDDR rather than swappable DIMM’s (can’t get an AI CPU with a non-soldered board).

Peers over the Internet would be abysmally slow or untenable for many workloads, at least with the way a lot of stuff is built currently.

HOWEVER, that’s assuming monolithic non-specialized/optimized models. In the future as we see models built and trained for more specific jobs, it should be possible to have individual students run more as specialists and swap data. There are models that are specialized currently but not really an ecosystem for them:

      • General LLM/Chat or
      • Image recognition
      • Image generation
      • 3D Spatial navigation/manipulation
      • Code generation/processing
      • Network analysis
      • Audio processing/generation
      • Etc

If we think of something like creating an MMO (and assuming we didn’t include the moral issues of AI generation), then a pipeline could have different assets building a soundtrack, 3d models, scenes/animation per a script, character voicing, various dialog, 3d world space mechanics, etc all running from different clustered machines
