Welcome to the first monthly bloomer megathread!

Once a month I’m going to pin one of these to give people a space to share the good things happening in their lives! It can be something big like international news that brightened your day, or something small like a cool bug you found.

Either way, if you need a place to escape the noise and boost your morale for a second, this is it!

This is a bit of a test to see if people really want a thread like this or if it kind of defeats the purpose of the comm. Feedback is welcome! If you want to be pinged when a new one of these drops, let me in the comments and if there’s enough interest I’ll make a ping list

The only rule is to keep the vibes chill!

It’s haloween! I love haloween! Easily mt favorite holiday and the only one I celebrate willingly! Got to have a walk around and see some decorations and trick or treaters and soon I’ll be heading to a punk show under a bridge. It’s the only holiday where there are multiple options for enjoying it, trick or treating/handing out candy, parties, just vibing and watching spooky movies. It’s all legit! It’s the best day of the year where the world feels like it’s on my level

Christmas is bullshit. Obligatory gift exchange day and then Thanksgiving 2 but bigger. I got gussied up and went to a punk/noise show under a bridge, my buddy’s experimental/industrial thing was booked and we collab so I did a step in for the middle bit. I was wearing a long overcoat and have teased out really big 80s hair like Robert Smith mixed with Motely Crue which I recently died deep red. I was told I am the most goth thing an audience member had ever seen. Which was very flattering but also until fairly recently that eas my alternative culture subclass and I gained in crust. I just like…genuinely also enjoy Romantic literature, dont consider myself a horror fan but also declare this month Gialloween and watched a bunch of obscure italian films. All my clothes are black.

My partner’s been depressed recently but the other day we went to bougie used game/anime paraphernalia store to poke around and when she lamented the cost of getting a certain game for 3DS, I immediately said, “Y’know, I can just hack yours and you can play whatever you want?” I spent a whole day loading that sucker up (mainly because it’s so damn slow to download from hshop), lovingly organizing all the games she wanted and throwing in a bunch of extra stuff like a PS1 emulator and Tekken 2 since she had spoken fondly of it. When I showed her what that doohickey can do now she smiled and I saw some light come back to her eyes.

I joined an anarchist club. They have the biggest leftist library you’ve ever seen, a muay thai class, really good education/organising events, various workshops, and some very cool members. All food on the premises is vegan and they like to feed you. And it’s also pretty queer and diverse.

I’ve been struggling with my creative writing for a couple of years. Recently, feeling like I lost all my juice. About two months ago, I just sat down and had a hard think about what I wanted for my original characters and ultimately just started typing. Happy to report that now I have just reached the 150 page mark and am so immensely proud of myself. I finally managed to write a coherent piece for one of my oldest characters, and it rocks!

        Giga huge

It reminds me of what I was doing. I eventually found a writer’s critique group that taught me so much about authorship and story design. But before that it’s you, an idea, and hundreds of pages of a little guy doing cool shit

        What’s the story?

Thank you! And thank you for asking!

Having other people to ask about writing is one of the best things that can happen to you when you really need some feedback. But you are right, until you have anything to ask questions about, it’s just empty pages, a medium of filling them and your brain doing the funniest somersaults to fill them. It’s worth it, every time I try. What are you writing?

Oh that’s a long one. Short version: It’s a crossover fanfic. I have a demoness I created when I watched Supernatural for the first time, then I added some Star Wars and Assassin’s Creed. My demoness had a rough couple of years and this story is basically her working through what’s holding her back and down. And just by accident, she stumbles onto something big. :3

It’s mostly a personal story, has a lot of my personal struggles in there too, but it’s fictionalized enough, I think. I’m still editing at this point, and there’s a lot left to modify.

How curiously close to how I started writing in college. I just had a bunch of people talking about my struggles and one fuck ass gremlin man who was rewarded for bad behavior.

Right now my focus is in a story where Icarus was laughing as he burned in the sky and is therefore the central mystery of a shonen/YA. This kid grew up deeply indoctrinated in a fascist, imperial society and, while searching for his mentor who had a change of heart, comes to discover a society living in the sky. They have a lot to say about his argumentative ignorance about pride and legacy. And then he and his friends are all tortured in various ways as the pressures of the imperial war and the dragon king’s curiously AI shaped technology comes to a head again a goddess who feels like her domain is being trespassed upon.

Oh my, now I’m really worried about my quality of writing :') but there’s always strange people in college, I think that’s part of what makes it what it is meow-hug

That sounds really intriguing! I’d love to have a read if you feel like sharing (now or later)!

It’s important that you don’t sweat the quality of your first draft. It’s the beginning of a long process of craftsmanship. I know writers much more dedicated than me who will completely reimagine and reframe their work between drafts. For example someone had the main heroine switch from a 30-something office worker to a teenager, to fresh out of college to make relationships fit around her. There’s a chance you only come to know what the heck you wanted to say after you’ve already said 100k words. And what a blessing it is to have something to say. As long as you have that, the words will actually serve the form no matter if they’re the equivalent of drawing with crayons

Oh absolutely. I’ve been writing for about twenty years by now, so I like to think of myself as “experienced enough to know the basics”. I have no proper experience apart from what I write for myself, so the bar right now is very low: Finish the draft and edit it. That is going somewhat well for now, so I’m happy as it is :) and since I got some experience with professional proofreading, I’m confident I can turn this thing into something beautiful eventually. It’s just gonna take patience and time.

May I print this out and hang it above my desk? Because I feel it, sincerely. I like the comparison with crayon drawings, it feels like this most of the time. Figuring out what to say is probably the hardest and most rewarding thing, and even if it takes ages, once you have that in a draft, you can change everything around it to make it fit.

Yesterday I saw a black kitten on campus that I used to see almost everyday in August but that I hadn’t seen in a month. It was still very friendly and still likes my headpats.

This month I’ve started a Minecraft server to play with my gf so that we can do fun stuff together despite the long distance, and I built quite a few farms so that she doesn’t have to bother grinding for stuff if she doesn’t want to. Also these past few days she’s had a few job interviews that went well for some pretty great positions!!! I’m very excited for her!!
