      Of course there is testing. But it’s done statistically. Nobody inspects every single package of anything that enters any country.

      And, historically, there has also been some level of trust in the inspections that happen at the production stage. But with all the cuts that DOGE and RFK have made to food safety assurance in the USA, that is no longer trustworthy adding extra levels of burden to import insections.

    I wouldn’t trust any US-owned produce of I was Canadian. I had corn in the husk the other day and it tasted like chemicals in the bottom, which has never happened before. It was likely insecticide at too high a dose based on looking it up.

    Sorry, Canada. We suck more than usual at the moment.

    Driscoll does not grow a single berry. They are a genetic bank of seed stocks that contract farms to grow berries year around. By contracting, they have plausible deniability about pesticides in the berries.

    Have you noticed you can now buy berries year around?

    And why isn’t CFIA checking food? That’s their job.

          No surprise really. Nothing is happening in regarding labeling either. So many products not labeled with origin or mislabeled (maple washing). We need tighter rules, stricter controls and hefty fines.

    Partner and I go out of our way to avoid Driscoll’s. We used to eat a lot more of their stuff but stopped a few years ago. Very thankful that in the past few months, our local groceries seem to be pulling in other brands and sources. We buy and support every chance we can to send a message. Genuinely, just last week we passed Strawberries that were 75% off and left them on the shelf.

        Yeah we get some frozen but have to be careful there still. At least we try to make sure it’s a Canadian brand/packaged in Canada. The strawberries are probably still grown in the USA, but if we can at least support Canadian workers in some way, better than nothing.

          Sometime products will rotate. You might like cherries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries in the frozen section of Empire or Loblaws.

          For Costco, there is only frozen blueberries for frozen fruit from what I remember.
