Couch co-op (and split screen in general) basically disappeared from mainline AAA titles after they realized they could just make people buy two consoles and two copies of the game

GTAV had no coop and it was about 3 main characters. If you want multiplayer you get to play GTA Online, a microtransaction-riddled hellscape.
GTA San Andreas had Co-op, the 2nd player had a random npc model and one of the features was that they could kiss CJ.
If they do it’ll be 2 years after launch and will require a $15/mo subscription and will require owning 2 copies of the game.
