Yeah, Ontario is thought to derive from a Wyandot phrase for “big lake,” which they generally used to refer to all of the Great Lakes, not just Ontario.

Hell, that area was “Nuevo Mexico” before Mexico was a country. It was named that because the region was thought in legend to be the home of the new Aztec Empire.
