    Dear OP,
You’ve posted an image instead of linking to the article. I don’t understand why everyone on Lemmy doesn’t understand this is completely worthless.

It seems to be an American thing. When I was in the US I was confused by all that drink cans are labeled in weight measurements rather than in liquid measurements. Although I guess it’s the US so I should just be grateful that it wasn’t been measured in fractions of a corgi or something.

8 fluid ounces is a cup, 4 cups is a quart, 4 quarts is a gallon. Most canned drinks are 12 fl. oz, or 3/4 of a pint.

8 ounces is half a pound.

        It makes perfect sense!

A pint’s a pound, not quite the world around, mostly just in the US, Liberia, and Myanmar, but also in several commonwealth countries and not to a precision level where local gravity applies

Does that not mean that you get different amounts of liquid for the same 12 fluid ounces, because a pint of water does not weigh the same as a pint of beer, which in turn does not weigh the same as a paint of Coke.

No. Fluid ounce is the volume. Most filling processes utilize the specific gravity of the solution and then fill by weight.

1 L of water is 1kg. Let’s say you add 500 grams of sugar. Now the solution has a specific gravity of 1.5mg per ml. So a 500 mL fill (16.9 oz) is 750mg. This is really rudimentary but I hope it kind of explains how the process should go.

It has some grains of truth but it’s mingled with too much personal opinion.

There are studies on how much water humans really need. If you want to calculate it the scientific way, you need to factor in at least lean muscle mass, total mass, surface area, ambient temperature and humidity, activity levels, and diet. There’s no magic number of ounces that’s correct for everyone.

Fortunately we’ve evolved a really awesome mechanism. When your body needs more water, you get thirsty.

So if you want to stay properly hydrated, drink whenever you feel even a little thirsty.

ADHD can make you completely ignore that signal for way, way too long.

My body also misinterprets that signal as “hunger”, and a craving for some wet food. Maybe like yogurt or a cup of pudding. You know something that just slides down easy. Yeah #thisiswhyimfat.

Three article boils down to the author being a whiny WSJ entitled asshole, which is what I expect from the WSJ.

Author, you don’t need the 40 oz cup.

Quoted Expert, you need around 125 oz a day.

Author, but water is so boring and tasteless, I want sugar and you get a fraction of water from food right? I don’t wanna drink water. Written Toddler Tantrum ensues

Author, so in conclusion you don’t need that 40 oz water cup.

The rest of us, STFU you entitled twat.

      125 / 40 = approx 3.

That’s really an absurdly huge cup if it is about 1/3 of your entire daily water intake.

Right wing newspapers love to do this shit where I live. We get into a crisis, people start skipping meals because they don’t have money, and they will talk about the health benefits of dieting and fasting 🙄

Poverty is surprisingly expensive, but you can get Nofudatall for freewith qualifying insurance plans !

right wingers have a serious problem with comprehending the idea of consent. is dieting and fasting good for you? yeah sure, when done right. but is being forced to do that good for you? hell no, even if there are health benefits you didn’t choose to do that. and in the next sentence they’ll preach about freedom

Health is, ultimately, the product of diet and exercise/physical activity. You get out what you put in. Everybody knows this.

The problem is…one of the problems, for there are many…ok so a few of the problems are, as others have pointed out…ultimately come down to housing and city planning.

The problem is, we somehow can’t figure out how to get diverse, fresh food, within a walkable/bikeable distance of everybody. So that leaves a few options:

        • Be car-dependent, or
        • Buy shelf-stable (or frozen, or more preservative than foodstuff) food from a place within walking distance (which also means buying no more than what you can carry at a time), or
        • Dine-in, take-out, or drive-thru

It also doesn’t help that most American’s are overworked and can’t find half an hour to cook an actual meal, let alone sit down and enjoy it. We’re all burning the candle on both ends trying to make ends meet. And our food selections allow us to pick two out of “fast, cheap, healthy”.

        • Cheap and Healthy? Will cost you time.
        • Fast and Healthy? Will cost you money.
        • Fast and Cheap? Will cost you health.

We don’t have a surplus of any of those things…but the one that’s easiest to ignore (until it isn’t) is health. And so that’s the bank we draw our credit on.

Now add car-dependency on top, and we can find the time to at least go grocery shopping maybe once a week. We find the fresh produce is expensive (and probably also harboring parasites), and won’t last a whole week in the fridge…but we also kinda feel like maybe we should eat a vegetable every now and then, so we get some…but most of the groceries are gonna have to last that whole week, and will need to be fast and cheap…

It sucks, but hey, it’s the best country in the world (or so I was told through 12 years of forced education).

Yes. That happens when all your food comes from the dollar store and the gas station mini-mart, and you drive everywhere.
