My partners mom is absolutely terrified of our cats (sweet babies btw) but it’s from some bad experiences she had when she was younger. We can’t really blame her I think there’s lots of non sus reasons to be feline-averse.
Obviously, there’s room for a lot of nuance in this issue (sorry). I think hating an entire species for any reason is kinda wild especially as humans but also I think people that farm roaches to feed their collection of reptiles and spiders are kinda insane. I mean definitely invite me over to see the zoo but I’m good on having that in my own house.
More than disliking either cats or dogs I think being super into dogs specifically is kinda sus and liking cats is more of a green flag than any dislike is a red flag.
As a child, I had bad experiences with cats and dogs, I declared them nasty and gross for many many years. I would’ve been described a ‘hater’.
As I grew up, I had good experiences with cats and dogs, I now like them.
Perhaps peoples’ opinions on things are reflective of their life experiences and not some core revelation about a person’s soul.
Cat haters genuinely creep me out and have almost always consistently been unpleasant people in general. Its not a perfect litmus test because I know some downright evil cat lovers too.
I like dogs for short stints but find them exhausting. I don’t really get this whole wanting a creature to be obsessed with you thing I find it very suffocating and off putting. I had some dogs I knew as puppies and visited often but eventually their enthusiasm just became too much, still loved the little rodent creatures though but I couldn’t even hide from them for 5 seconds just all over me for a solid hour before they would chill out.
Conversely my cat will sit at the door when i come home and then the second i am done taking my shoes off n shit pretends im not there and walks away. She does love a good roll around in whatever i was wearing though. My favourite thing that cats do is spend 10 minutes circling my lap and settling down only to get up the second i become a minor inconvenience of moving 1 millimetre in any direction
I’ve always had cats, but I was exposed to dogs via my cousin growing up. I prefer cats, but I think dogs are cute too, but they’re a lot and a big commitment. Dunno why people are fighting over this crap.

There’s a cat out in the world named Chimkin (that exact spelling) because of me. He’s a swole & roly-poly boi who awaits his couch time with his human every night and he is very dumb, especially compared to his mastermind brother.
Aggfh! I know that feel! Rats are awesome and I jusr cant handle the lifespan to fall in love again. I lived on a farm where all of us were vegan and every expected us to be using thr animals for stuff. We just had space for some extra friends. Chickens are cool people! We can have goats cause we like hanging out with goats! Animals are cool guys and appreciating them for who they are shouldn’t be weird!
I’m a huge fan of rodent and rodent-adjacent pets. I’d never get one cos 1. cats, 2. cages, 3. ferret-proofing my house sounds impossible.

Me too! I would have them as pets again as an adult, but I’ve told myself no more pets with short natural lifespans because I’ve had to say goodbye to a enough pets in my life that it’s starting to take its toll (grew up with rats, budgerigars and chickens and they all have shortish lifespans 5-8 years goes by faster than you think)
I still miss my budgie. I hate how such incredible little dudes have such short lifespans. And when people go “oh there are so many you can just get another” they miss the point, because none of the others are him and have his personality

I have known two people who would without fail joke about killing cats every time the subject of cats came up. Never known anyone with a similarly fanatical hatred of dogs. I much prefer cats myself. Dogs are sensory overload nightmares.
I like dogs but they’re a lot of work. I mean, I know birds are too, but I don’t need to walk a bird every day because it’s small enough that flying around the house is good enough.
Also even if you get a dog a friend they want you to constantly pay attention to them. Birds are fine with spending time with a bird friend while you’re at work if you make sure they’re compatible and you don’t accidentally convince your bird that you’re their mate lol
I have rescue dogs and like yeah… they are a lot of work. I love them, but they take a lot of time and money and I can’t explain concepts like “I’m very busy because of a deadline, please amuse yourself and I will make it up later”. They have needs, and if I don’t meet them nobody will.
I would not recommend adopting any non-human to someone that wasn’t completely onboard with what they require, and aware that it means many other compromises like wear on things and travel restrictions but dogs can be particularly demanding on you time. Other non humans I have cared for have been able to enjoy their own company more or required less direct attention to play/exercise/socialise.

I had birds until fairly recently. Grew up with chickens and budgies and had a cockatiel for 15 years

I can understand people not liking dogs. I think they’re cool but they are a lot. They have zero chill and are high key all the time. I had to warm up to dogs as I grew up cause when I was a little kid I found wm pretty scary. Cause they were the same size as me and have next to no grace or awareness of their surroundings indoors. Its like being inside with an excited horse at that age. I think disliking cats means that you’re evil. They’re harder to anthromorphize mentally and SO many people are adamant about animals meeting them on a human level. This is easy for dogs cause they have no self respect or boundaries at all, it’s part of what kinda puts me off about em. I have boundaries too and dogs do not give a fuck about that, which I don’t blame em for, I blame us breeding them into submissive toddlers.
dogs do have boundaries and do have self control, they usually have to be taught this by a person or another dog. Its actually quite fascinating to witness dog on dog correction unfold. Basically a dog can have perfect manners and recognize when another dog is acting inappropriately and correct them.
The old man dog who lives in my neighborhood was raised to have some boundaries (basically to avoid strangers,) also they let him roam around off leash. He’s chill, although now they got a puppy and some kids running around, he’s rather protective of them. He doesnt quite have the “correct” social etiquette, he’ll bark at us / other people now to keep us away from them, and also pretends to bite us. He’s an interesting little guy.
anyway I digress, dogs have personal boundaries too but usually people just ignore them. They have signs that they are uncomfortable, want personal space, etc. Some dogs were abused and have trouble adapting to people or other dogs, they’re much like people in that sense.

I explained rational reasons why dogs can be off putting. They do tend to be care less about personal space and boundaries. As I said, if you visit a dog owners that dog will be all over you whwre if you visit a cat owner the cat will most likely never even be seen. I can understand people having an issue with dogs where I cant understand people having an issue with cats. Most cats arent all up in your business and none bark, they also arent as potentially dangerous. It’s a discomfort i can rationalize. For cats there arent really any rational reasons.

I dont have that tendency but I understand it. I’ve had enough roommates with dogs that im pretty used to them. I dont want anyone to get the impression I dont like dogs. I just understand why people would find them unappealing from a rational perspective where I dont think an active dislike of cats, which is different from a preference, is weird.
Dogs are fun as hell, but theyre always on. It’s too much for me. I became a co parent to any roommate’s dog ive ever had, they were always welcome to sleep on my bed etc as long as my kitty didnt make em fuck off, teritory disputes were their business. I absolutely cannot handle being around most dogs and you just summed up why. It’s hard to socialize with someone or relax or concentrate on much of anything when there’s a big furry animal running around and jumping and barking in your face. I’ve met a few chill ones but most of them spike my blood pressure by like 20 points.

And after seeing a pit bull latch onto a border collies face, im good on the violent breeds. cat haters lack the emotional maturity to deal with a cat, they need the automatic loyalty of a dog. nvm the fact i can’t leave the house longer than 8 hours. my friend with the pit bull has to have his parents walk the dogs at lunch. also dog houses tend to smell because their stink gets everywhere. my friend ripped out his old carpet and when i walked in his house last week, i could tell the air was fresher. he’s also just a filthy person though. having a dog is too close to having a child.

Many kinds of dogs bite, people like to always mention chihuahuas bite the most, but im pretty sure nobody has died or been mangled by a chihuahua. i know someone who took in a cane corso from a shelter, he has a huge scar on his arm. i knew someone recently decided(stupidly) to get a pit bull when they have two cats. The pit bull was chasing the cats, so they got rid of it. Pit bulls are great if you dont have kids or other pets.

I love cats. I like dogs well enough, if they come with responsible and conscientious care-givers. I don’t want another, I prefer the freedom of coming and going as I please, without the cost and time obligations. I don’t want to have to choose between crating, to protect against accidents and misbehavior, should I be delayed, for unavoidable incidences, which punishes the dog and leads to further disregulation and misbehavior. Let a neighbor feed the cats or have a gravity feeder and water station, and they’re good on their own for a day or two.

Hey we are all struggling, I’m the last one to say I’ve never let my depression spiral me into a slob phase. However, if there was a 50/50 shot I was cleaning up dog piss before I could even walk into my home, I would be losing my mind with anticipation every evening on my way home. That would just keep me in the mindset for longer.

Yeah it can be annoying and frustrating. But I can tell you that my dog was on vacation with my parents for two weeks and I missed her so much. They’re just worth all the annoying parts.
