Though I think this also shows something I’ve seen a lot with right wingers. They cannot imagine any group of people without a very strict hierarchy. Leftists being like “oh, I’m sorry to hear that you were homeless” isn’t just basic human compassion, it’s genuflecting, they assume that if someone shows compassion towards you, it’s actually a sign of weakness, like a dog rolling over onto their back to show they aren’t a threat and you are dominant. They can’t even conceive of a group where people aren’t constantly trying to stab each other in the back to try and get ahead themselves, they assume every group must do this, just the values they use to determine social capital must be different.

I do find the rhetorical treadmill to be pointless. It’s a purely semantic replacement for actual material struggle. Unhoused will become derogatory as soon as it becomes mainstream, because the mainstream attitude towards people who don’t have a stable living condition won’t change, and the term will be absorbed by that attitude. Then we’ll come up with, like, residence-deprived as our next term and we’ll all shun unhoused for its degrading connotations.
I agree. The important question is, who sets the terms for liberation of any oppressed group? I’m always skeptical of patronizing solutions concocted by their “betters” especially when said solution (which doesn’t solve the root problem) is then used as a cudgel against substantive change. Of course, that Reddit thread is really about the snide sentiment that we must accept “biological reality” that there are betters and lessers in society and that one need not mince words when referencing the latter.

Been in a psych ward a couple times (thankfully just for a few days each time; it was mostly to get on meds for the first time and then quick adjustments that I could not wait for an appointment to get made) and it seemed a lot of the people there were either regular people with addictions or regular people who got dealt a shit hand. I only encountered one other person I suspected might have been psychotic, (using the clinical term literally) and they were mostly pretty chill.
