Or at least, if you go to the news or investor relations pages for any of the big defense contractors, those are the sorts of projects they’re bragging about / selling.

A lot of them do work. The F-35 is the most capable non-chinese military jet ever. US air defences are the most comprehensive and avanced ever outside of China. The aircraft carriers allow them to project power almost anywhere on the planet. But that’s all incredibly costly to build, maintain, and replace. The degraded industrial base means it doesn’t matter how good the wunderwaffe is; they can’t make enough to matter.
