Sure, I got into Buddhism within the same month when I got into Marxism a while back now. Breht, the main host of RevLeft is the only content creator Buddhist M-L I know of that wasn’t born in to a Buddhist family.

Not many people know but Marx, although he was not a Buddhist, actually dabbled in meditation and mindfulness a little. I can’t seem to find it but I recall seeing a letter of his to a friend where he talks of his mind being in a zen state and how wonderful it felt or something like that. I’m dumb it is literally in the article linked below.

“I have become myself a sort of walking stick, running up and down the whole day, and keeping my mind in that state of nothingness which Buddhism considers the climax of human bliss.” - Karl Marx

This is a decent read below if youre interested:

Desire is used quite a bit, but it all depends on translation and preference.

I definitely agree ‘craving’ is a better translation. You’ll find ‘desire’ all over in older translations still. I like to just use the terms Tanha and Chanda themselves when it makes sense. It was in the sutta I posted above that Brahma Sahampati convinced the Buddha to teach after he thought it may not be possible to teach people what he experienced. I’m sure it gets mentioned elsewhere since there’s a lot of repetition.

It isnt a tautology though? If you “brag” about your enlightenment you are still bound to a desire for social recognition.

But they want to tell people that they have transcended. That’s not a tautology, it’s a contradiction.

I know we’re going back and forth over a silly meme and in the context of a social media post I agree, but want to mention that the Buddha himself explicitly told people he was enlightened also. Of course, bragging about your status rather than stating it factually, or showing off your ‘abilities’ gained from it (such as flight, lots of people be floating in the mythology) is strongly discouraged since it gives people the wrong idea that these abilities and the status itself is the goal and can distort their views.

In Buddhist teachings, desire leads to suffering. For example, the desire for wealth may lead one to do dangerous things, hurting themself, or to exploit others, causing them suffering. So the aim of Buddhism is to transcend desire by following the ‘Eightfold Path’ (right thought, right action, etc.). When desire has been controlled, one will ‘want’ nothing, and can escape ‘samsara’ (wordly pressures; often compared to a wheel since it involves cycles of action and reaction, cause and effect) to reach ‘nirvana’ (a state of calm, bliss, peace, etc.). The meme is pointing out that one who truly wants nothing will also not want social media recognition for it.

In Buddhism the “goal” is to not want. To have no desire. Desiring things is the root of all suffering and what keeps you tethered to “samsara” the cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. (It’s a cycle so its a “wheel”.)

By following the eight fold path (Buddhist religious tenets) you give up desire and reach nirvana. A state of total detachment and the end of desire and therefore of suffering.
The joke here is that one person asserts that mommy desires nothing (Either as self identification, or as a joke about being unable to please someone in a dom/sub situation), and the response in the community note is that if she needs to tell people she has no desires she manifestly still has a desire for recognition.

It isnt funny imo, but none of my jokes are either so 🤷
