It’s just I get so bored stuck at home all day apart from hospital appointments, and what else am I supposed to do? But it’s so stressful, why is everyone so horrible there? Even seeing other people get bullied stresses me out. I always tell myself I won’t look at it any more, but then I always find myself browsing it again.

This time someone asked a simple question: Why is a fictional character in this book so poor when he has a full time job as a teacher? A couple of people explained that teachers are badly paid in the USA but like 400 other people jumped in with rude nasty comments to the OP about how stupid they are for not knowing american teachers are underpaid. The OP had clearly stated they weren’t american and was just asking a simple question.

On another subreddit someone was waxing lyrical about how poverty is a choice, if you’re poor, you’ve chosen that and the government should not give benefits to anyone as it just encourages them to be lazy.

Reddit has both gotten more vitriolic and more reactionary.

The median political opinion has moved from ‘tepid liberal’ to ‘barely mask-on conservative’.

Comments are way more toxic and there are many more race-baiting/misogyny-baiting posts. I see a ton of posts that are pretty clearly just “black person commits crime” usually with “white person heroically stops black criminal” or or “indian person does an SA/creepy SA-adjacent thing” with all the comments being essentially “indian people are subhuman”. Same with China-related posts. And any post with a woman in it is filled with comments sexualizing the person. It wasn’t always like that (well, maybe the sexualization was, but it wasn’t always so racist).

Honestly, after being on Lemmy for a couple years, I really can’t stand Reddit. I just look at it sometimes for niche communities or to see if there’s anything I didn’t already see on Lemmy.

Mask on? Almost every time I look at that site regarding anything even tangentially political almost all the most upvoted comments are literally:

      i-am-adolf-hitler

Then the others are just mask on lib reactionary and a tiny minority are leftists who are still stuck in the garbage pit of the dirt bag left (e.g. r/TrueAnon)

Every single place on that hellsite is beyond saving.

i don’t bother which nice communities since the instances that are large enough to have niches are no better than reddit as a whole – so i just browse by All while filtering out the known diet-reddit communities/instances and let whatever come, come knowing that it’ll automatically be better than reddit by default.

Some time back I made the mistake of commenting on reddit because I wanted to discuss something I couldn’t here, and genuinely within like 5 comments I could feel I was becoming a meaner person, and not in a useful way. It’s really bad out there.

like a week ago i was considering suicide over what i saw in a reddit thread. thankfully im banned from there so its easy to not check it. sometimes posts from reddit just flash in my memory again like that one where a guys girlfriend went out cheating and got sexually assaulted and they were telling him to not support her and kick her out for example. or those odious threads about parents abandoning their disabled kids or just hating them. i want to cry just thinking about it.

I started opening shone jump and reading manga instead of social media when im waiting for the bus or taking my break at lunch or something. and honestly i cant recommend enough finding something to do that replaces doomscrolling.

literally anything is better than social media doom scrolling, an app like tufon can make it easy to follow comics/manga/manga/manhua with all their updates, and to find which sites host them in specific

If you’re open to the idea, joining public telegram channels, matrix channels or discord servers just to talk about shit might also be a decent idea due to your immobility. Instagram is common among nearly everyone else and people I meet usually communicate from there, so that’s another avenue for connections

Checking Reddit must’ve become a habit for you so I would try getting into manga/comics first, then blocking reddit, if you don’t mind I can add you via Discord too

It’s a private messaging app that mostly functions around public/private chatrooms instead

If you know how matrix works, then you know how discord works

Most online people use discord and nowadays most communities are built around it

It can house toxic people so it’s not particularly safe, consider it like an open forum where the distance to interaction is zero, where people can come and go as fast as they want to (it’s usually conversations between utter strangers in large servers)

Since you’re new you probably won’t know what to join, discord has a server browser for that. If you want both small and specific, disboard exists as a site and can show you some of them, do note that discord as a company is fully content to sell your data and privacy. You might do better in matrix but it’s difficult to find public servers in matrix (i tried and failed, I didn’t get into it for that reason):::

TL:DR It’s a public app for any community to gather in, for immediate conversations you can stop at any time. It might feel strange for you esp if you’re new to it, maybe just try watching how conversations progress and lurk around if that’s the case

Thanks, but I’ve thought about it now and I think maybe it’s not for me, I’d like to actually try and cut down on social media after all, especially places where there are toxic people.

If you can do reddit you can surely do other things. If there’s anything you’ve been wanting to learn or a hobby you want to sink time into, try to train yourself to do that instead of reddit whenever the impulse comes upon you.

Read ebooks. You can get basically any book ever written to be readable on your phone. Legit or otherwise

I got off reddit entirely earlier this year and it’s been very good for my mental health. As other commenters have said, read more ebooks during what would normally be reddit time.

same here and anything besides reddit would be good at reddit time.

  • I use hexbear as my sole reddit alternative. If I see reddit posts it’s usually because they come up on duckduckgo for something I’ve struggled to find elsewhere, but I refuse fo log in, or make a new acct.

    I refuse.

I have heard that internet isn’t a disconnected thing which shows extremes but a place that reflects the opinions of polite society as it exists in the moment and yea these are the opinions of bullshit dogshit people that make up most of the ‘managerial’ class. People who think a 35 episode bullshit web series is something too much for them to sit through have the gall to say those experiencing the worst of the current system are lazy.
