2 billion ? “How much could a banana cost? 10 dollars?”

You don’t lost 2 billion dollars, you get bananas worth 2 billion dollars in return, which undoubtedly gets inflated by profit margins at the register, meaning you sell it for more than what you bought it for.

Enough to make sure there’s always money in the banana stand.

I think he means “we the country as a whole” buy for 2 billion dollars from Brazil, then add costs and profit margins; instead of “we the consumers” spend 2 billion dollars buying bananas from resellers, who have already added costs and profit margins. But it doesn’t really matter, he just says whatever to get what he wants. Whether it’s true or makes sense is not relevant to him.

Imagine applying the same reasoning inside the US:

“Massachusetts buys $2 billion of oranges from Florida. Massachusetts is therefore losing $2 billion. If Massachusetts stops buying oranges, it saves $2 billion.”

That’s plainly incomplete. Massachusetts has oranges in exchange for the money. Requiring Massachusetts to grow all of its own oranges would probably make Massachusetts poorer, not $2 billion richer.

He has no understanding of trade deficit, thinks it’s zero-sum, because the word “deficit” is in it.

Yup. He’s also ignoring other basic economics and accounting like the fact that individual consumers don’t buy the bananas from the producer. Corporations do and then mark them up and sell them for profit. A transaction is not just a loss of money in exchange for a good that then dies or becomes useless. It’s like the fucker has never heard of an asset. You also don’t lose money when you buy equipment for your company that will “pay for itself” through use or even just depreciate in value. I KNOW he understands the concept of net worth… right?

Another day and another story that makes me wonder how this lobotomite made it into office.

It has apparently taken Trump 80 years of being alive to figure out how spending money works. In his defense, he’s probably not used to paying what he owes.

That’s exactly it. He’s not saying he doesn’t understand basic commerce, he’s saying he wants to steal the bananas instead of paying for them.

That’s why Trump never pays his bills, he doesn’t want to “lose” that money.

But then we don’t have bananas worth $2,000,000,000 at point of export to grow into an even greater amount of money flow and income within our own country.
