truestul posting on my hexagonal bear? it’s more likely than you think.

really though how in the hist does this shit work? there an egg in there? do argonians in black marsh come from eggs but do live birth elsewhere? the latter actually happens within some real species. egg laying–>live birth has been done a heap of times in evolution.

In ESO there’s some gesturing around argonians reproducing differently if they’re near a hist. IDK if there’s ever live birth or anything but there is a quest line about people stealing Argonian eggs to do some fucked eugenics stuff with them.

any characteristic of the argonians can be changed in the presence of the hist (see morphological changes from TES III-V) but while argonians (and their eggs) are particularly ‘maleable’ the hist can change about anything in black marsh.

doggirl-smart the question here is what the characteristics the hist made to facilitate reproduction far afield, the existence of argonians that had never been to black marsh is established but the difficulty/danger associated isn’t elaborated. it’s possible grains, even heaps of argonians might’ve lived so disconnected from the hist that they might still possess traits from TES III like reverse legs—populations in morrowind for example.

It is said that some Argonians view “mating” as nothing more than an order of the Hist to reproduce,[48] but a variety of reasons exist for the act in Argonian culture not unlike any other of the mortal races. Love[49], attraction[50] or even coupling with members of other tribes to improve relations,[51] are all normal customs.

Distinct from other races, the Argonians have cloacae.[52] Despite having breasts, Saxhleel are capable of laying eggs.[53][54] Argonians can display ovoviviparity, and due to their humanoid structure they can have live births where the eggs hatch internally.[UOL 6][UOL 7] Argonians born in cold foreign provinces or to small nomadic tribes tend to have live births without the use of egg nests, while those in warmer climates with established, stable, and permanent communities would likely see a great number of eggs.[UOL 8]

In the Second Era, there were limited-edition Argonian erotica featuring androgynous etchings of the race in circulation.[55]

from the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages surprisingly not NSFW. this is the kind of shit that i really like in fantasy tbh, like it’s pointless minutiae but it makes the world feel more real in a way.

edit. no nvm there’s some pixelated daggerfall titties in the gallery section

          happens to the eggshell though

absorbed, at least in cases where a shell is formed at all, some animals like this just have yolk. it’s a few grains from placenta and continuously nourishing an embryo though, the yolk can run out and they wee thing gets out or they’ll switch to eating other eggs or uterine secretions.

because argonians are presumably one species (naga are questionable) the switch to live-birth shouldn’t be too “advanced”, probably just weak-shelled eggs and no uterine action after the yolk is spent. infant mortality in places like skyrim is probably pretty high.

I don’t think it’s ever explained how Argonians reproduce away from the Hist. We know they do, but not how. I can imagine Argonians consuming Hist sap when trying to conceive and this triggering a different pregnancy, or maybe breathing the Hist spores? Unclear.

Todd Howard please, we need to know!
