Over 90% of those deaths are Americans.
There’s a really bad surge in Texas right now that hit me like a truck. I’d had it a few times before, but this was by far the worst and the shortness of breath and brain fog aren’t going away this time.
A few times before ? Wtf
Hasn’t everyone had it at least once by now?
Still haven’t
It’s been 6 years. It’s not that weird. I got it in July of 2022, sometime in 2024, and at the very end of August this year.
Meanwhile RFK Jr, the anti-vaxx nut job that is in charge of the HHS, is doing his damnedest to prevent the most recent version of the covid vaccine from making it to market.
Well crap. Sorry too hear. I hope it does go away in time. Long COVID is no joke.
I heard that nicotine might be beneficial. try a nicotine patch.
I heard ivermectin works. Go buy a bunch. /s
I’ve heard meth helps. But you have to get it from this one guy I know. You can trust him. He’s a Republican.
Sorry, this is wrong. Right now it’s about 200 people per day
And that’s not worldwide. That’s just in the US.
doesn’t that say 5.4 daily?
Can you point me to where it mentions that 5.4 stat? I’m probably misreading a chart… I found this section which I think moldy_rice was reverencing:

you’re probably right
Y’all are so cordial, wtf
What the internet could be. Makes me smile.
That’s surprising, considering we have dedicated antivirals for it now. 😲
people have since balked mask usage, and vaccinations. i recently spoke to someone and they said “it still exist, you can do that forever”?)
Those don’t work very well compared to the vaccines and the people who would most benefit from them refuse to take them anyway.
i know people that are more resistant to taking the vaccine then when it was first introduced. what a surprise a bunch of them got the variant last year, and spread it to my family.
I got long COVID and now my memory is like the guy from Memento.
Obviously I’m exaggerating, I have trouble remembering what I’ve done yesterday though
Why did you post this twice? /s
Obviously I’m exaggerating, I have trouble remembering what I’ve done yesterday though
I thought that was normal. . ?
It’s surprising how many of the long COVID symptoms are common with ADHD. I will expand on this topic later but right now I have to find my car keys.
Between TikTok, ADHD, and COVID, I genuinely can’t tell what’s to blame nowadays.
Have you checked behind the fridge?
I check every hour or so… oh, might be my OCD
Yesterday I heard that in my country of the Netherlands, 4 people received euthanasia last year due to long covid. Euthanasia is doctor assisted suicide, and to receive it you must prove “unbearable suffering” with no hope of improvement. They weren’t super old either, the youngest was 51.
It can attack every system within our bodies, and even hurt our brains if we’re unlucky. We failed to contain and stop the spread. Now it’s mutated and will be with our species for the foreseeable future. Videos of those with really bad long covid are so sad. Physics Girl had her whole YouTube channel flipped and talked about it openly. Fascinatingly horrifying.
Young people too are increasingly requesting assisted suicide. I read an article about how in 2025, of the 8 people that made a request through the largest assisted suicide association (DGHS) due to ME/CFS, 5 were between 24 and 29 years old. There are sadly no official numbers for total assisted suicides due to ME/CFS (or any other reason) available.
Looking at a statistic I found, in 2024 the same association helped just 4 people in the same age range request assisted suicide:

Don’t forget, they stopped reporting a lot of COVID related deaths as COVID a while back. Lots of sweeping things under the rug.
This whole epidemic was sweeping under rugs from start to probably forever. Insane malpractice on so many levels and right wing nut jobs cry about governments asking them to wear masks or getting a shot as if that was a problem.
I find some irony in the fact that a lot of those that refused to wear masks during Covid are now wearing masks as ICE.
they also arnt reporting all the raping resulting in pregnancies thats been happening too.
where can I read about that cause wtf?!
(also those poor victims)
Well, yeah… As ICE, the masks protect THEM, not other people. That’s all they care about.
They stopped monitoring the waste water for signs of Covid illness in my area years ago. Not because the numbers had gone down.
they stop mid 2022. people were still get nasty covid infections, one of parents had covid that caused very painful sore throat a year later, gave us a minor infection. then last year when the razor blade variant was running around, i had in sept. i believed it was partially responsible for triggering atopic dermatitis.
Shigella is a gastrointestinal horror, striking more than 200 million people in the world each year and killing more than 200,000, mostly children
It was said all along that it would go from being a pandemic to being endemic.
deleted by creator
that is not how endemic vs pandemic is defined and covid is not currently the same strain for most of the world
Covid 19 is regarded as endemic by most epidemiologists. It doesnt matter how many strains there are, its purely that fhe disease is now at a relatively steady and predictable level.
It’s still a pandemic
My partner has long COVID; from that we see a community of those getting diagnosed is increasing as well.
I always found it interesting how most people seemed to only focus on survivability. Like, COVID was almost always spoken about as if there were only two outcomes: die or not die. Conversations about the disease, virus, or vaccines often completely ignored the lasting damage that the disease can leave survivors with.
The mental and physical degradation is just brushed aside.
Its like those people who focus only on GDP per capita …
But then never focus on Reported Quality Of Life.
Who cares if the GDP Per Capita is like 1 million per a person if over half of the peoppe occupying a region are billionaires?
Modeling indicates there are more “excess deaths” due to COVID19, roughly 900-1600 per week. See link below.
The best numbers I know of are coming out of https://www.pmc19.com/

These are insane numbers! Somehow the long covid ones are the ones that scare me the most. An ex colleague of mine got long covid after an infection in 2023-2024 (when covid “was over”). She now has so much brain fog she can’t live independently anymore… scary shit
I got long covid in 2022 as a healthy athlete. I’ve been bedridden ever since.
Indeed… I know somebody who else has it and is just energy starved like crazy. If she goes anywhere she just crashes in the evening and needs 3 days to recover. Doing anything is basically wondering whether its worth it to crash for 2 days afterwards…
And the research for it has dropped. So its basically an “I hope it passes this month” by the doctors as there’s no actual treatment (apparently).
Sounds like ME/CFS. I have that, it sucks dick. Had to go to the doctor in-person on Monday, and it fucked me up until today (Saturday). Normally I do phone consult, but The System says No sometimes. The only treatment is “try not to trigger symptoms and hope you recover” like it’s the 1800’s 😂 like at least give me opium or something
The research is actually still picking up. Otherwise you are spot on.
Oh that’s good to hear!
I’ve heard it from them, but maybe there’s not that much being done in our area/country to find a solution for long covid ( or maybe there is and we just don’t know about it/have any breakthroughs ).
its called sequelae, alot of viruses can cause post-viral syndromes, long covid is the unofficial term. i believe it triggered my atopic dermatitis more early than usual.
I was chatting with someone recently with lots of long covod symptoms. They were mild but persistent for over a year. Her doctor said it’s not long covid as too mild. I was thinking to myself, isn’t everything on a spectrum. If her match, it’s covid, unless he has an alternative answer. Unless you see black and white, it’s horwes, not zebras.
As always, diagnoses are simplified medical/social constructs that don’t fully capture the reality.
and it doesn’t help that there’s loads of prejudice against Long COVID in medicine.
The weekly infections isn’t so bad. That means everyone catching it once every 2 years on average. I assumed it would be an annual or semi annual thing.
However, the world is forever changed. I was recently on holiday in Bali with my mother in law. She was quite unwell with cocid like symptoms. Couldn’t get a test anywhere. The locals would sell anything if they could make a buck, as they are mostly subsitence living. I assume it’s a policy.
I know they are still available in Australia but they are less prevalent and nobody bothers testing or isolating if they are. People think it’s just a cold as they don’t personally get very sick. The selfishness and lack of scientific and medical understanding in the age of information is an indctment of humanity.
This is the misinformation age.
i track that website, as well as wastewater surveilance to give me some idea of how careful I need to be, week by week.
What metrics do you use? Like, what’s the line at which you wear a mask?
I used to go by number of infections per 100,000 but I can’t find that anymore and I feel lost.
Question: “infections per 100,000” - with what disease? in what time or spacial frame? Personally and professionally I’m not just concerned with SARS-CoV-2. What disease? What sort of exposures are likely for you? Influenza is not yet on the rise, but likely will be. When it starts up get your vax, you’ll likely get about 3 months of protection. If you have immune issues, consider a second flu shot in 3-4 months. Masking, handwashing. Rotavirus sucks, but handwashing takes care of most of the risk. Measles? Get your vax!
Time and intensity are important. Are you going to be outdoors, with a small distantly space group and/or over a shorter time frame? Is this event/ time with a larger group, lots of heavy breathing (gym, singing, use your imagination), indoors, for a longer period of time?
Many infectious diseases have post acute syndromes. Consider which of those is worth the risk to your life and those around you. Beyond the acute phase: a comprehensive literature review of long-term sequelae resulting from infectious diseases https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10864624/#s3 Then mask up.
At the moment PMC19 modeling shows that we are in the beginning of the 13th peak in Covid19. Ask yourself, do you wish to participate in this peak, or no?
If no then mask up.Go a little more granular, local, small, find the waste water surveillance for your county, if it’s available. Look at the county level for PMC19, which alas is from the previous weeks data. PCR takes time to run. Same for waste water surveillance.
Consider if your town is a big tourist destination/ had a big influx recently for some big event. My town has huge events nearly every weekend of the Summer, which attracts people from other areas. I generally avoid such events, since 2020. And if I decide to go, I wear a mask.
Consider where you are going: Regardless of those numbers, anyplace where large numbers gather (big group choral event), or large numbers pass through (grocery store), wear a mask.
Consider how much your death from cardiovascular disease, which is increased for 3 months post covid19, yes even a mild case, will mean to those around you. Also consider how much the death of someone you care about will mean when you get a mild/ asymptomatic and pass it along to them, e.g. your unvaccinated!?! elder parent.
Consider social implication in a small group - does everyone vs anyone vs no one in that group do anything useful in preventing the spread of infectious disease, e.g. testing, masking, handwashing, vaccination, participate or not if obviously sick (oh it’s just a sniffle, oh, it’s just allergies, oh X obvious symptom goes without any change in behavior whatsoever).
Apparently I can keep going on this, and have probably already “flooded the zone”. These are some consideration.
tl;dr - wash hands, wear a mask, get vaxxed, avoid exposure to ignorant people who don’t give a care for themselves or for you.
I wear a mask anytime I’m inside with anyone outside my bubble since 2020. Which means I haven’t eaten at a restaurant without good outdoor seating in 6 years, which is annoying for my friends.
The covid vaccine is no longer available in my country.
I always said I’d remove the mask when the number of covid infections dropped below 1 case per 1 million people. Now that countries don’t track infections, I don’t know how to translate that boundary into waste water testing or whatever data we have today.
Same with me, and restaurants. I hang with friends outside, turns out that was mostly a good choice.
Ok, so back to my questions: 1 case of what, per million people over what time frame? There were over a million or more C19 new daily infections during the 4th thru 12th waves of this disease. We are over 500K new daily infections per day and 3.69 million cases per week, and rising on the current, 13th peak. Per the graph on pmc19.com.
According to (https://www.statista.com/statistics/861113/estimated-number-of-flu-cases-us/) each flu season in the US from 2011 t0 2025 had from 9.4 to 51 million cases. Take a look at that graph, especially 21/22 to 24/25. When the numbers start to rise, or as soon as now get your flu vax, and… wash your hands, wear a mask.
My point being there are common diseases, Covid19, Influenza A, Influenza B and others, which will outright kill a person, or give them post acute effects that will kill, or disable.
I’m not worried about getting some short-term, non-chronic infection of influenza or covid. I’m worried about getting long covid. Or giving any of that to someone else who is more immune comprised than myself.
My boundary is 1 person testing positive for covid in one day per 1 million in my region (roughly 100 km or so from my work/home). If we had a few weeks pass were less than 1 person per 1 million people were positive for covid 19 per day, I’d feel the risk was low enough to eat inside a restaurant.
Brain fog doesn’t seem like the best term, it needs something more clinical.
long covid isnt a medical term, i thinks it called sequelae for complications outside of an infeciton.
Long COVID is actually a medical term. Look it up on the WHO.
But some diagnostic classification systems use “Post-COVID Condition” or “Long-term sequelae of COVID-19”
Thanks for sharing this website
I just don’t understand why all this beautiful data is shared in an image format?!?
Makes it easier to share, like this.
Wut. You can take a screenshot of a data table.
But it makes it a lot more difficult to share the text. And it’s impossible for blind people to read
Then how would you have done it, now that you have access to the data?
A table.
I know some folks who think the vaccines are the cause of covid. They have other weird beliefs based on gossip and stories.
I met an anti-vax nurse …
I wouldnt be surprised if there were anti-vax vaccinologists!
My mom, unfortunately, falls in that category. She won’t get the vaccine but she still wears a mask everyday.
Huh I hadn’t heard of that combo before
At least it’s logically consistent. If you don’t want to get the vaccine for whatever reason, masking is what you should do.
Yeah, she’s been into alternative medicine my entire life. Thankfully, she not completely against science and does go to a primary doctor for check ups.
My parents are intelligent, relatively informed and not really the kneejerk type, and they believe every health complication anyone has had in the past half decade was entirely amplified by the vaccine. Fucking hell. The pandemic really broke people’s brains
I’m afraid that statement precludes your parents from being described as intelligent. Intelligence is the ability to extrapolate meaning and truth from information, which they evidently cannot do.
It’s rare but not impossible. A Case Report: Long Post-COVID Vaccination Syndrome During the Eleven Months After the Third Moderna Dose - PMC
Well, fuck it. Let them.
COVID broke public health. You can’t even get tested where I live. Nobody has any idea of the prevelance.
Tests are in every pharmacy and relatively cheap.
That’s not a public health test as it’s not reportable. Just lime I can take my own temperature but public health doesn’t care. Compare the treatment of COVID to sexually transmitted infections that are reported and contact traced.
they are expensive, online t hey are super cheap when ordered in bulk. i ordered some last year.
Lucky you
I’ve been saying it’s endemic for the whole earth for years. Now it’s just another thing to test for (in my area) when people come in for upper respiratory issues along like flu and strep.
its only gets reported in the news, if the new variant is particular severe, like last year, otherwise you never hear about covid. also people around me, dont think it exists anymore, even in a covid-conscisous city.
That’s called pandemic
In this case, I’m referring to the baseline or prevalence throughout all of Earth’s population. Whereas pandemic is more like an epidemic that has spread to other contries.
Covid is common now like the common cold, flu, strep. It’s always gonna be with us I’m afraid. I would also believe that most every human has been exposed to the virus at this point.
https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/featured-topic/endemic-epidemic-pandemic
You can’t simply buy self tests in Canada?
Yes. But compare it to getting the clap. With a sexually transmitted disease they will report it for statistical purposes then contact trace etc. With COVID it’s only reportable with a fatality. If you test positive there is no way to get it counted. You just don’t know how much is out there.
When I say you can’t get tested it’s not like there are clinics where you can go in and et tested like you used to. Still can for STBBDs though.
You just don’t know how much is out there.
Yeah, I don’t. Doesn’t mean though that public health officials and researchers simply stopped monitoring the situation. Just like the Flu COVID isn’t going to vanish. So what’s the point of continuing regular public status updates unless there is another critical situation brewing?
As I’ve posted in another reply Influenza kills roughly 24,000 people per month directly or indirectly worldwide. That is in a good year. In bad years casualties can rise to as much as 54,000 per month. PER MONTH. Diseases such as Influenza and COVID simply can’t be eradicated because they are so easily transmitted and in the majority of cases only cause temporary discomfort.
See why this is a ridiculous post?
Your downvotes are wild and really indicative on the type of people here. Jesus Christ lemmy likes to exist in a bubble and as soon as you provide critical thought or say something someone doesn’t want here (and yet is still on topic)? Downvoted.
Anyways, you’re right. It sucks but you’re right.
Case in point couple of years ago we had a trifreca of influenza, COVID and RSV. Health Canada was reporting on all 3. To your point the people who die to this day of influenza and RSV is insanely high. We don’t hear about them constantly. COVID is now part of that crew. Will never go away. Too transmissible and it adapts too fast.
If you are older get the RSV shot yearly. Everyone else, get your flu and COVID shot yearly.
Wait a minute, you say that covid will be with us for ever but didnt a number of covid AND influenza species actually go completely extinct back in the end of 2020 or 2021 because of how well the lockdowns were implemented snd adhered to?
WHo is to say that such a lockdown cant be reimplemented and surprisingly extincts certain species of respiratory transmissible illnesses …like ALL covid species?
Lockdowns didn’t work even when there was global news coverage of a pandemic happenening. What makes you think they would work now?
That’s not too much. If anything I’d consider other countries don’t report it, hard to believe the US is hit that much harder
hard to believe the US is hit that much harder
is it though, considering the us response?
Or lack thereof
Unlikely, it remaina a reportable disease in the UK. We’re about 1/6 the population of the US yet we’re not getting 1/6 of the deaths. Most of Europe will also closely monitor covid deaths and the population of europe as a whole is over twice that of the USA.
I suspect one reason more people are dying in the US is because more people.refused to get vaccinated during the pandemic? And if those people are disproportionatelt more elderly (because elderly people tend to be more conaervative) then they are also more vulnderable to dying from covid when they get it.
Still, we are talking about 90+% for 4ish% of global population. It’s not school shootings, these numbers should be outlandish for everyone
like the US, the fear of covid makes businesses nervous, so they pressure the govts to stop reporting it, also they are afraid of making REMOTE work a thing again, because they lose out on revenue from people going to businesesses.
I’ve been coughing for 2 weeks now. Nothing serious, but I took a covid test today, out of curiousity. Test was expired. Inconclusive
did you have any other symptoms. usually coughs dont last that long. could be bronchitis from cold, flu. i had covid last year and it cause really nasty symptoms. funny thing is the covid dint really cause alot of coughing per se, as it resulted in so much sputum from the lungs it irrittated me to cough instead.
I’m in the same situation. But my test was negative. Is there any way you can get another self-test?
This year I had a nasty cough for 5 weeks. It was HMPV. Never knew such thing even existed before taking the test.
Check if you can get a pack of multpile tests. I was able to get one that checks for covid, flu and hmpv.
Couldn’t find the one I’ve used, but just discovered that Boiron, the fake pharma company, is making covid tests as well. We’re doomed.
amazon has pretty cheap tests, grocery store sell its, but they are quite expensive.
I’d rather not order from amazon. I had to order from aliexpress once, because there was literallly no other place to order a three-way cord switch. Got bombarded with spam for weeks. Amazon is equally vile as aliexpress imo. I’ll check my local drug stores first.
Order them from amazon? I see prices like 9 euros for 10.
