Good to see Pattinson back in the creep zone.
I’m so hyped for this! Pattinson is gonna kill it as Scytale. I also love how they made the Guild Navigator’s spice tank into a sarcophagus. More practical and portable than how it’s described in the book. It also looks like they’re gonna be injecting some Children of Dune elements into this, which is cool since Denis is ending his run here.

ah ok, that’s what that is.

worm god
ah ok, that’s what that is.
I just saw other people mention that it’s also possible this is Hayt being presented as a gift, which is totally plausible! I still hope it’s Edric though.
I want James McAvoy reprising his role as said spoiler.
I dug around to see the spoiler on yt but didn’t see anything good, do you have a good link to it?
Your flair is very appropriate for this post!
I had to log on to the default UI to check what I put in there because I completely forgot. lol
I hope they keep the “Hitler was an amateur” scene.
That’s good stuff. Ass will be in seat day one.
Does he become a space worm in this one?
no, tmk this series is just covering paul’s arc so no no wurm emperor sadly.
It’s Paul’s son that becomes the work if I remember correctly, Paul becomes a purported madman missing around the planet or some such?
What powerful music!.. I’m completely sold!
This could have ended with naming thier children and it would have sold me a ticket. I’m stoked.
I hope there are more original songs and better shots,

Paul taming Shai Hulud was a really disappointing scene, as were the spice trips. The BW gladiatorial arena was cool until I learnt that it was basically abusively hot.
I was blown away by the Paul taming Shai Hulud scene. The VFX were perfect and the camera work showed the massive scale of the worms.
Why do you think that? It was very plainly shot, just showing closeups of Paul holding the reins from bland angles getting blasted with sand or flying tracking shots of obvious CGI. The worm didn’t seem to show any particular reaction or resistance and there was no impressionism or particularly distinct things happening on screen showing their bond, Paul’s growing power, his increasing connection to the environment.
It showed the scale of the worms, but … Like the news covering a flood
I should clarify that I only read half the book, so I haven’t read that scene. It sounds like the movie didn’t capture something special about his relationship with the worm. What I got from only seeing the movie is that there’s a skyscraper-sized being that behaves more like a force of nature than a creature. So the vibe I got was more like Paul learning to surf than taming an animal.
That aside, visually I was impressed and thought afterwards, “Well, that could have looked a lot dumber than it did.”

I didn’t read any of the books. I read wikis and stuff, but from what I understand from the plot of the film, and the lore surrounding the works, we are seeing Paul and his gifts mature and manifest in their totality; part of him taming the worm is reaching his powers to their peak to the point where he can tame these huge creatures. The first scene we have of Paul (AFAIK) is him using the voice to force his mother to give him water. There was no impressionism or emotional expression in the scene (With the worm) from a technical viewpoint; no zooms, blurs, interesting camera angles, movements, lighting or anything of the sort. We didn’t see him emanate his will in any way, he just climbed up the hooks, grabbed the reins, and that was about it.
Visually, it looked like he climbed unto a bumpy floor and grabbed a few strings, while people threw dust in his face. And then it showed these giant train worms going through a desert. There were so many interesting shots in the first film, and the way music melded with those scenes was amazing. A lot of the sequel just felt more of the same, repetitions of established things and sticking Paul’s theme over the top.
Same with the hallucinations and drug trips. He just sees a fucking beach? Great. I can look up pictures of beaches on earth at my computer.

From a story perspective, Paul riding the worm was more to demonstrate his acceptance and alignment with the fremen society. Don’t need any special powers to ride, but does need technique and offworlders would never be taught to do it.
As the other post said, it’s closer to surfing a wave than taming an animal. The hooks do allow a level of direction control, though.

This further proves I know shit about the Dune series.
But the film was quite lackluster in its visuals doing something expressive and new, and I didn’t appreciate the amount of musical recycling that was done.
You want more Gurney and his balliset?
I dont remember too much of Messiah the book but really liked Children of Dune so glad to see some of that will be incorporated as well. Trailer and posters look so cool I cannot wait.

In Dune Part 2, Chani leaves Paul. I hope Denis brings them back together in Part 3. It’s so sad to see two people fall in love and break up. They are such a cute couple. The movie should have a happy ending.
Yeah, the second movie changed quite a bit there.
I’m not sure how it all can loop back to the story of the books.
It shouldn’t. I never read the book, Messiah, but I read that its dark. That could be the reason it was not as popular as Dune. I hope Dune Part 3 has a happy ending. Why should viewers leave the theater sad especially when the movie debuts close to Christmas?

jesus fucking christ have you heard of art?
Sad art. Perhaps the artists are sad, and they want the audience to feel their sadness. If an artist is happy, wouldn’t he want others to feel that joy?
No, there will be no happy ending. Paul has a narrative arc in the first three books (Dune, Messiah, and Children) that closely matches the Classic Greek Tragic Hero.
The Rise, The Fall, and I guess the Cameo?
The Hero rises, and then their own hubris causes their fall, and then they show up again, old and broken in someone else’s story.
Classic Greek Tragedies also feature the heavy use of prophecy.
The exact story beats might be different between the book and movies, but the narrative arc is the same.
But fear not, if you go far enough into the series there’s eventually a happy(ish) ending. A lot a tragedy and horror before that…
You’re probably right but hopefully not. In the book, Chani just follows Paul but, in Dune Part 2 she leaves him. Perhaps Denis will bring the two back together in Dune Part 3.
Vibe check: why do you think Chani left Paul at the end of part 2?
She opposed him leading the Fremen to war against other houses. She wanted him to just free Arrakis.
Oh. Oh, yeah, I agree. Your other comments made me think there was some missed subtext.
I’m not used to thinking of Dune as a romance story, even if it has romance in it. I’ve gotten so used to Dune being a fabular cautionary tale
Yeah, at this point in the book, Paul and Chani had a child, who had been killed by the Sardakar.
It was Paul’s sister who killed the Baron.
Then Children is the story of Paul and Chani’s twins, born during the events of Messiah.
But the movies have strayed fairly far from the books in a lot of ways. Paul and Chani had 2-4 years together and a psychic drug bonding experience where Chani got to see bits of the future through Paul’s power.
The first book ends on such a high note as well. All so the fall is further.
Still, even with the changes and omissions, the movies capture the feel of the books quite well.
Because life isn’t only happiness? I want to see this movie to have the same tone as Messiah, I think society at large is due some injection of “beware of personality cults” reminders right now.
Also, the “downer” Empire Strikes Back is still considered by many to be the best of the original Star Wars trilogy, despite getting panned for being too much of a downer right around the Christmas season when that came out too. I remember one reviewer saying something to the tune of “like receiving a Christmas card from your bank” or something to describe the disappointment they felt with the entry when it came out.
People already have a lesson from following personality cults in Adolf Hitler. No, life isn’t all happiness. That’s the reason movies should be an escape from unhappiness. Through Paul and Chani viewers can feel romantic love, a love which they perhaps do not have in real life.
But viewers knew that there would be a sequel to The Empire Strikes Back and the sequel, Return of the Jedi did have a happy ending. However, Dune Part 3 is the last of the trilogy. Note that the final Spider-Man trilogy, Spider-Man: No Way Home was sad. Why this love of dark endings?
Given that the majority of movies has a happy ending (which can often feel forced as a result of sticking to a formula) I personally feel that breaking with that tradition (outside of genres that often go for downer endings line horror) is refreshing and can make a movie a lot more memorable.
To each their own, of course, but I’ll be happy if the movie sticks closer to the books. There’s a powerful lesson and symbolism in there that I hope stays preserved on the big screen.
I read that Frank Herbert wrote Messiah to counter the impression that Paul was a hero. He wanted to show what happens when people fanatically follow someone. But there is already an example in Adolf Hitler. Messiah was not as popular as Dune perhaps because it’s dark. The purpose of a movie is to make money, not to strictly follow a book. Most of the audience for Dune Part 3 will have never read Dune or Messiah. We will have to see how well Dune Part 3 performs against other 2026 movies. It will have a lot of competition, Avengers: Doomsday, Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day to name a few.
I don’t personally care about any of the films mentioned, but I guess that’s to each their own.
You keep bringing up Adolf Hitler as an example by the way, but when Frank wrote this book, Hitler had already died decades ago and his personality cult was dismantled. Frank still deemed it necessary to warn folks about the dangers of personality cults though, and given by the fact that there have been many more since I don’t think that message can ever be said too loudly or clearly.
