As a European, it has been quite something to see how no European leader seems to have the slightest fucking backbone. While we mock Trump for making these demands, it’s actually not that wild to imagine they’ll be complied with.

Obviously it’s less about backbone and more about “war huh? That could mean profits, embezzlement money, and an excuse to tighten down on protest…” cap-think

they had plenty of backbone when called to arm ukraine and sanction russia and sanction iran and all that.

you gotta face it, this is what european leaders WANT. they’re living their best lives, serving the empire and helping it murder a lot of kids.

Honestly, most Europeans probably entirely agree with the politicians and think it’s the “proper” moral thing to do with all the propaganda over the last (at least) 75 years. Everybody’s entirely libbed up (in the best case, or straight up conservative/xenophobic/nationalist).

NATO has pretty much lost most of its deterrence value anyways thanks to the USA’s complete and total failure in the Middle East.

What, are Russia and China supposed to be scared by big bad America if it loses this badly to Iran? And all its mindless European puppet states are orders of magnitudes weaker to boot.

The only thing NATO has now is the nuclear umbrella. But the USA doesn’t need NATO for that, at least for its own protection.

And the whole US hegemony largely rests on legitimacy. The US was able to dictate to countries because nobody wanted to test the US militarily or economically. Russia and China showed that you don’t need the US for trade, and that you don’t even have to use their financial system. Iran is showing that you can defeat the US on the ground and that they’re unable to protect their vassals. All the Gulf states are now seeing that they were just pawns all along. Their countries are burning, their source of income has been cut off, and the hegemon can’t do anything for them. That’s the legitimacy crisis the US faces now. Any country they try to convince to be part of their protectorate is going to look at what happened to the Gulf states and hedge their bets.

Yup, we now see that the American blue water navy is impotent in terms of protecting shipping.

It’s a very long tradition of the US Navy sucking. If you want a good laugh look up the story of the US first battleship, the USS Massachusetts. It was useless before it even rolled off the line and succeeded in killing DOZENS of its own sailors and never seeing actual combat.

Europe can’t trust the US for it and France and the UK have their own anyways

Well to be honest Russia and states weaker than it still have reasons to fear the US. They are still running destablisation campaigns through social and economic warfare.

Although the trump admin is burning through military strength in a foolish gambit, under a more competent administration, the US can use its assets more wisely and try to recover. And even trump’s gambits are causing large damage (at least to civilians).

Admittedly, he did not chicken out about attacking Iran; not that from his perspective any consequences were possible that could have caused chickening out.

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

  • To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).

  • To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.

  • To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don’t post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
