I’m setting up a Plex / Emby / Jellyfin server for my parents and all they could ask for was romantic comedies and I don’t know anything about this genre

Does anyone have any recommendations for good romcom movies?
They’re very old lol so any good movies + anything that boomers would love would be great!

like eould you say they’re looking for boilerplate romcoms:
- Must Love Dogs
- Ghosted
- The Fall Guy
- Marry Me
- Maid in Manhattan
or more independent, off-beat/complicated ones
- Friends with Kids
- Safety Not Guaranteed
- The Invention of Lying
usually olds are really into the hollywood star system and will watch anything with their fave actors as leads. that can be a way to find a bunch of stuff through imdb
Moonstruck is like the perfect romantic comedy. Nic Cage and Cher in old time cozy Brooklyn.
When Harry Met Sally is a classic. Same with Defending Your Life.
If they’re into the more raunchier stuff, then Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a modern classic.
They might get a kick out of Bridesmaids. My parents loved that.
Mystic pizza, practical magic, miss congeniality, when harry met sally, wristcutters, Bridget jones
Oh yeah, the terminal
miss congeniality is so much fun. Even my very tight-laced, moralistic grandma loves to watch it.
About Time
Ooh yeah good call, and love actually too
Gonna piggyback this to ask for breakup movies
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the only movie I can even think of that fits that description. I must not watch those kinds of movies ig
The Banshees of Inisherin, as a bro breakup movie.
The Breakup with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, 100%
500 Days of Summer
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Marriage story, both to process cathartically all the toxicity (if there was any) and to be glad it never got that bad. Other than that, watching people crash out can be fun sometimes.
Not a personal recommendation just something I’ve done from experience with myself to get into genres I’m not familiar with:
Just search up lists of best rom-coms of all time. Find two different lists whether articles from rotten tomatoes or IMDB personal curated lists that have overlap of movies in the list and get all movies that overlap. Or just get the top rated ones as decided by rotten tomatoes, metascore, IMDB, etc. Hard to go wrong with that if you just want a bunch of things from a genre and don’t really have a particular care about a given actor, director, specific theme, etc.
Also going to second the person who said old people love the star system so find movies with their favorite actors in them and they’ll be happy most likely.
I’m A Cyborg But That’s Okay
Blast From The Past is a fun one!
If they don’t mind teenage-y stuff, She’s all That and She’s the Man are classics.
Fitting for this season: The Holiday.
I haven’t watched it in ages, but I remember liking Waitress. I love everything Keri Russell, so ymmv.
Notting Hill is good, too.
Does Crazy, Stupid, Love count as a rom-com? It has several couples in it.
The 40-year-old virgin is more comedy than rom, but it has some heart. Also some pretty raunchy stuff, so maybe not for parents.
Amélie for a kind of french, arthouse take on rom-coms?
You’ve got mail
My Big Fat Greek Wedding was my mom’s favorite for a long time, and she’s a romcom connoiseur
The movie Moonstruck featuring Nicolas Cage and Cher. It’s a fantastic movie plus came out before Hollywood created a tedious go-to romcom formula. I hate romantic comedies but it’s nearly 40 years old.
