    I mean… Isn’t the LAPD under him…?

Should the LAPD not be backing the protestors if the LAPD report to the local authorities?

LAPD doesn’t report to the governor, their authority comes through the city so they report to the mayor who does not work for the governor. LASD also does not report to the governor, they report to the sheriff who is elected and does not work for the governor.

No—I think the only regular law enforcement under the governor are the highway patrol and state park rangers.

local police would be under the locally voted sheriff sperate from statewide stuff. the only division he wpuld have any remote control over would be the highway police, as that service is a statewide service under the DMV.

California Highway Patrol has been at these protests doing crowd control so if those are under the governor it would be nice if he used those to help protestors or better yet sent them home.

Mostly the CHP has been trying to keep the protestors off the freeways, which is kinda their job. It’s unsafe for everyone, having pedestrians on the freeway. And it doesn’t allow people who think “this is getting out of hand, I was here for a protest not a riot, I’m going to get out of here” to do so. Much less “I picked the wrong day to shop for bargains in the Garment District.”

I feel like I also saw them just clearing out people on the street at night, although it’s hard to tell with all the different kinds of police there. I also remember CHP being involved with the clearing out of protestors back when the UCLA encampment was happening. So they can definitely be involved with other things so it would be nice to see the governor back his words up with action from any law enforcement he has control over.

Newsome isn’t progressive and is a very pro-corporate neo-liberal. My opinion hasn’t changed, but somebody needs to stand up to Trump and it might as well be him, even if it’s just an opportunity for him to posture for a 2028 run.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that a politician pretending to care and doing everything based on optics can still further the progressive agenda. Progress is still progress I guess.

He just better not win the DNC nomination…

He’s 100% the DNC guy, he’ll probably have signs that say it’s his turn. Only semi good thing is he’ll have a much better chance of winning than Hillary or Kamala had. AOC is the best choice and has the best chance of winning imo. Gavin is probably the 2nd best choice(electability-wise).

Generally pissed at him for being a corporate shill who actively harms unsheltered people and takes any opportunity to get a photo op or hot take that he thinks will help his presidential run in 2028, while posing like a smarmy, aging GQ model.

He said something about unfairness in sports due to players that have transitioned being a concern that was worth looking into

Thus, many vocal trans rights advocates have blacklisted him

Listened to the segment and yeah, he’s a politician: saying anything in a noncommittal way to get people in the room onto his side. He’s not principled for sure, but in this case I genuinely don’t think he was airing a true personal perspective either.

The moment he came on the scene, I thought he looked like a used car salesman. I still think that matches.
