Keeps reinforcing my mantra that we should be phasing competition away from society and fully shift sport towards health and socialising

I don’t think this poor woman owes anyone an apology. If anything she’s the embodiment of “never give up” “win at all cost” mentality that competition is all about. People mocking her are hypocritical, if they had a spine they should worship her for being the sportslady of the century

Other atheletes had to use the same equipment and track…

Idk personally I think she should have thought how it would affect others. Pretty disgusting for the janitors too, and the spectators.

To be more explicit, this is why I think competitiveness isn’t desirable, it’s profoundly individualistic and pushing yourself to those limits, refusing to give up even if you’ll have to embarrass yourself and everyone is not a good thing to promote in a healthy society.

I’m pointing out the hypocrisy of sports fans bullying her when all she did was following their philosophy to its logical end. For my part I’m criticising their philosophy so I absolutely agree that this shouldn’t happen!

being something of an evolutionary biologist myself i don’t think man was meant to push themselves to limits their entire adult life. the hunter gatherers must have been active, sure, but not obsessive

      • Looking at contemporary hunter gatherers, they seem to have fairly chill schedules. ofc there could be a bias due to that way of life remaining only in very few areas, and particularly in areas were natural food sources are abundant, but afaik the consensus is that in such societies, you spend roughly 4 hours a day hunting and gathering, and that generally happens at a steady leisurely walking pace.

But there are just some high stress situations were you need to hurry, and i know that high levels of exertion-related neurotransmitters lead to faster bowel movements. When you get your metabolism going, that just speeds up your digestion.

i dont see how it’s sub-optimal to shit yourself when you’re exerting all your effort. not that it’s optimal. it just doesnt matter. if you’re running for your life, who cares. you’ll wash later.

Lighten the load, expel waste, free up mental and physical resources from holding it, and deter a predator? Sounds pretty dang optimal to me!

and it’s not like predators cant smell where you’ve gone, even without this. humans had to have become used to not being able to smell all that well while pretty much everything around them could smell very well

What about the other competitors who had to touch her liquid shit which she knowingly spread everywhere, who could become seriously ill from that decision? Why does she get sympathy for making other competitors choose to either handle her diarrhea or lose the race, and for making the event organizers clean every piece of equipment she knowingly smeared with shit?

At any point she could have said, “I’m getting shit everywhere, I should stop.” Horrendous indifference to everyone else involved

Rephrased, agreed, sorry for careless language.

I’ve heard that about marathoners before, but in my mind this is a bit more like shitting yourself at the gym than shitting yourself on a run. I don’t need to lie down on the same ground that another runner has laid down on, nor sit in a seat that another runner has sat in. It’s a faux pas not to wipe down 30 seconds worth of sweat on gym equipment, let alone extensive diarrhea.

          Anyway that’s my two cents

If you don’t care, why are you commenting? For the average person, being trapped in an enclosed space with someone spraying poo particles everywhere isn’t a pleasant experience, let alone them smearing it on equipment. For a paid event, others were undoubtedly unable to give their all under that circumstance. Given how massive Hyrox is, this is a pivotal moment. That will establish new protocols in hygiene going forwards. For the people that were robbed of their chances at victories or personal bests, they’ll never get that opportunity back again.

After Wietrzyk’s identity was shared online, Hyrox said anyone sending abuse or threats to the athlete would be banned from any future events.

It said on Monday: “There is no place in our community for threats of violence or encouragement to harm an athlete.”

Yeah, very cool and normal to dunk on a woman who had an incredibly embarassing and humiliating moment in public, on camera, and is going viral because of it after she has retroactively forfeit her title and after she has stated that she had no signs of illness before the competition. This isn’t somebody going on the race track in spite of having had diarrhea that day, this is somebody who made a wrong split-second decision in a high stress situation. Get off your high horse please.

The issue isn’t with the athlete, the issue is with Hyrox. They should’ve stopped the event which they’ve acknowledged. If my high horse is following up the previous article which I posted about it. I have no idea what to say to that, I hold my hands up to that.

It’s not split second though is it? She had shit all over her for quite a period of time, enough to spread her liquid shit all over the mats and equipment. That’s a continuum of decisions: should I sit on this machine that others will have to use, knowing I am dripping liquid shit? Should I lay down on this mat that others will have to lay on, knowing I am dripping liquid shit? With a consistent answer: yes I will spread my shit to this object too.

If she was embarrassed she would likely have removed herself from the situation no? Or if she felt that others should not have to clean up her shit or interact with it to continue the event. She knew she was dripping liquid shit everywhere on camera and continued anyway.

Westerners 10 years ago: “These Chinese savages literally let kids shit on the floor”

Westerners today: “I want to offer my sincere apologies to the people of china for shitting on the floor. I know my actions had an impact beyond myself. I am learning from this experience and will carry these lessons with me”
