The words are also on the inside of the cup.
I like James Hoffmann’s take on the “death before decaf” folk. Decaf drinkers are the most pure coffee drinkers because they’re willing to put up with often times bad coffee (since many roasters don’t respect their decaf options as much as their regular ones) just to be able to drink coffee later in the day. Meanwhile the DBD folk are admitting they’re only drinking it for the caffeine.
I don’t fully 100% agree with it but I do mostly agree, and I’m glad someone of his influence and reach said it. Decaf deserves way more respect (from roasters, cafes, and coffee drinkers). I’m a huge fan of decaf, personally.
This is me with low/no alc beer.
I really need to find some good 0% drinks. I love most alcoholic beverages for more than their ABV (and usually when I drink I wish I wasn’t slowly getting drunk) but I’m yet to find good 0% options for most drinks. I’ve had a single good 0% light beer and that’s it. Every whiskey, rum, dark beer I’ve tried 0% has been genuinely bad. If grape juice counts for wine then I love that too but that’s it. I need to explore more though.
There’s a big difference between 0% and 0.5% beer in my experience. Probably something about the process. In my neck of the woods 2.5% is also common and that can taste just like normal beer except the lower alcohol content gets you much less drunk.
I’ll definitely keep that in mind, thank you!
The only NA beer I’ve ever had that was both good and tasted like actual beer is Brewdog’s Punk AF. Mostly because it’s loaded with so much hops that it tastes like an IPA first and a beer second. Most other NA beers I’ve tasted had that raw grainy character that really disturbed me.
Athletic Brewing makes some pretty good NA beers. I particularly like their stout, but they have two IPAs that are tasty too.
As someone who drinks a lot of beer, have to disagree. I’ve thought all theirs were just garbage, for lack of a better/more charitable term.
For something that actually approaches “real” beer taste I’ve only found Guinness and Sam Adams just the haze beers to be close (and the latter is fine, not amazing.)
Jmho though.
That’s going to be the difference in taste buds. Normal Guinness is okay to me, but I prefer a richer stout. The NA Guinness tastes like metal to me.
The only NA beers I’ve had are Stella and Guinness, and I love both. Have you tried those?
I have to have decaf because if I dont my heart goes ‘oh hey, have an extra heartbeat or two. Just for funsies’ and I have to sleep in the hospital.
I missed the taste, not the jitters. So I found good local decaf and thats what I drink.
People ask what the point is. Like, bruh, if its about the caffeine its not about the coffee. Its like drinking wine for the alcohol and not the taste. I dont understand.
Well I do. Caffeine is an addiction and people who are addicted cant imagine liking it without the addicting quality.
I think I have the same issue with coffee if I drink it fast, but I usually drink it ridiculously slowly over the span of 30min, and then I enjoy it a lot more
they’re willing to put up with often times bad coffee (since many roasters don’t respect their decaf options as much as their regular ones) just to be able to drink coffee later in the day. Meanwhile the DBD folk are admitting they’re only drinking it for the caffeine.
Is that such an issue for people? I haven’t yet found a limit for regular coffee, after 8 or 9 cups I ran out of day rather than ability to drink more coffee.
Is caffeine, the drug famous for being a thing that helps you stay awake, a problem for some people when they’d like to go to sleep? Yes. Yes it is.
Ah yeah, I always thought that was just an excuse people use to drink coffee. Like if I need to stay awake and drink coffee it either does nothing or makes me sleepy
I do of course have ADHD. Or at least all the symptoms and a diagnosis. Shit’s bad enough that the psychiatrist agreed I don’t even need to take the test.
That’s a classic ADHD response to caffeine. Generally people with ADHD will still get the jitters and increased heart rate, but they will not get the energy-boosting effect, and sometimes even get sleepy. It being a stimulant, it can also have a (slight) benefit to your ability to focus.
There is a specific genetic difference in how caffeine is cleaned up in people. Some people are rate limited by the ambirnt CYP1A2 in their system, and others produce more to meet the demand in response to caffeine.
For the caffeine sensitive there is like a 5 hour half life for caffeine in their system.
Hi,
You have ADHD or a similar condition in which stimulants are processed differently than in neurotypical brains.
Love, Some guy online
Some people can’t have caffeine in the afternoon because it gives them insomnia. Quite a few people I’ve worked with have told me that they had to stop drinking coffee in the afternoons once they hit their 40s.
I found a good roaster where I’m at that has decent decaf, good times. I can’t drink too much caffeine for health reasons but I love coffee and can still drink it all day this way.
The process of caffeine extraction alters flavor because theres no (feasible) process that is able to extract the caffeine without also extracting at least some other components of the coffee flavor.
Id rather have water than decaf but I’ll drink my coffee at any time of day. Caffeine has nothing to do with when you can drink it.
Caffeine has nothing to do with when you can drink it.
I mean, that’s just not true.
There have been numerous studies that had conclusively proven caffeine, when taken close to bed, measurably worsens sleep quality. Yes, even when the participants claimed they had no trouble getting asleep.
Yes, but that isn’t going to stop me.
That seems um. Potentially toxic?
Well, it is promising death before you can have your decaf
Most decaf deserves the bad rap it has, but there is some good stuff out there! As nice as the name sounds I think Swiss water processing sucks the life out of even good beans. Look for supercritical co2 or EA processed beans and you’ll likely agree death is worse than these by far.
Got a little ninja mug a while ago, and all the ninjas disappeared after the first wash. Which I thought was cute, until I found them drowned and rended in the dishwasher filter
So crafty. Water slide decals 🤦🏼♂️
What a shame. Is nothing made quality anymore?
