      you can also stream for free. All you need is an ad blocker and some patience. They usually rip directly from CR anyways! So anything on the major sites will definitely be readily available on a free site, its the more obscure stuff you might have trouble finding.

      I tried to buy a SFF PC recently to use as a media server / homelab. 9 year old machine that would’ve been $50 5 years ago is now $200…

      I repurposed an old laptop I had laying around and it’s still wayyy better than the janky setup where I hosted everything on my desktop.

    Crunchyroll is a waste of time imo, you can find countless better offers on fansites, all for free, I remember a lot of stories about them paying their translators little to nothing, best to take your money elsewhere.

    I used the site like 10ish years ago, I got an unskippable 2 hour ad that was a whole video of some guy reviewing some hotel, iirc it was in Romania or something??? And there have been cases where they mix up the subs for different animes or make arbitrary decision to use localised names for things when it makes no sense (For example it-was-me & should-have-been-me )

    It’s just so jarring, complete enshittification!

    Watch Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End - it’s very very good. I’ve gotten really sick of most of the anime tropes so I ended up cancelling my subscription years ago, but it got me to resubscribe. Highly highly recommended.

    If you like horror I enjoyed “Another” when I watched it as a teenager. I think it still holds up. If you like shounen I recommend Jujutsu Kaisen as my partner and I have been watching that recently. Fire force is also great especially if you have a nice sound system and don’t mind some overly sexualized characters.

    Yeah, all the fan tracking sites and forums/reddit are just worthless except as describing the current state of new-ish anime fans. Been that way for awhile anyway, 10+ years.

    I remember in the 2000s at least there was a mostly 4chan-backed attempt for people to develop their taste and to create some sort of consensus on a series of core anime people should watch. Which has its flaws and that specific group of people went from bad to worse, but no one else really picked up that project. You see Reddit posts where people keep making these charts although I don’t know how much they pick up steam.

    I don’t know what you like. There’s stuff I think people should watch but yeah.

      I remember when I got into anime and I had some website page bookmarked that was like “top 100 anime” or something. Might have been just films or might have been 50 or whatever. But I was referencing that for like 2-4 years after that probably, slowly making my way through it, mostly by accident. I’m curious how much of it I’ve seen now. Tried finding it but outside remembering some of the entries I have no idea what it was. I remember the first thing I watched was the film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time which is a solid summer movie to watch.
