But then again, squares are also my bane of existence. I wanted the repair a electric kettle, because I kinda like these kind of projects and a kettle is dumb as fuck in term of technology complexity.
But the first screws were “security” screws so I had to grab a few bits to do it, no vie issue, but why did they do that ? (We all know why). Tested the current on the circuitry on the base and all is good. So the switch is like on top off the handle. I went to dismantle the handle, too, and there it was, a square head screw so corroded that it was impossible to get a good grip on it. Tried putting a rubber band, nope. Tried switch the bit size, nope. Then, out of desperation, I drilled the screw inside out to destroy it and being able to finally separate the parts. Broke by drilling bit.
And that was the end of that repair attempt. Thrown away, for a faulty switch and repair hostile materials.

You’ll rarely see them in stores, but some manufacturers use square screws that aren’t robertson, and they’re much worse, even than philips. Corrosion can mess up the best screw so maybe not your case, but I’ve run into this and it sucks.

Because I swear I had the closest sized tip for that screw but it still slipped and i ended up “eating” the whole … Receptacle? I can’t bother to properly translate or search for a better word.
But thanks for the input! That would kind of make sens that a company who used security screws for a electric kettle base would also use the horrible square shaped screw too for the rest.
Unpopular opinion, torx is love torx is life.
I’m very fond of Torx-head screws, but the smaller sizes (3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0 etc) can too easily be turned into a circle, especially the security torx ones for some reason.
I immediately switch to square head for anything smaller than 5mm
I possibly would if that existed in my country. Our standard is Pozidrive, which is a bit like Phillips but with extra bits. Pretty reliable, but definitely not perfect.
Just be glad you don’t have to carry both metric and standard screws in all their respective threadings because God forbid we do anything easy in the U.S.

Never had torx fail on me even while going HAM with the impact driver.

It’s instant too, half the time I don’t even notice that the screw is stuck. I’m wondering why the screw is taking so long while I’m just digging out the material.
