Guatemalan-Americans are a mixed bag. They can range from fairly left-leaning Mayans who fled the civil war to annoying Evangelical freaks with some bullshit story about how they came with 20 cents to their name and now are successful leeches (landlords) with over 20 properties
Lmao my first gay kiss was with a confused, left-ish, second-gen Guatemalan-American with homophobic, conservative, small-business-owning parents. He tried to impress me one time by telling me he was “kind of a communist”… but couple years later he accepts an internship with a Democratic congressman
Lmao fits my exact experience with them
Is there a prominent reactionary Vietnamese diaspora in Orange County?
America’s Vietnamese diaspora are mostly conservative and extremely anti-communist in general (especially first generation ones), I think there’s just a lot of them in Orange County. There were huge waves of Vietnamese immigrants in the 70s/80s, and the vast majority were from capitalist South Vietnam; privileged kulaks fleeing after the communist North won the war
Most older Vietnamese-Americans exclusively fly the outdated flag of South Vietnam, and will froth at the mouth if they see the modern unified flag 🇻🇳

There’s a skateboard movie Gleaming the Cube, part of the plot is a Vietnamese anti-communist group in California embezzling money and sending illegal weapons to Vietnam. It stars Christian Slater and features a bunch of young skaters like Tony Hawk and Stacy Peralta. Sorry this is sort of off topic, I just like mentioning it when I get the chance because it just sounds absurd to describe.
Lol I totally forgot the plot, I just vaguely remember an arms deal going down in a garage or something. Gotta give that a rewatch one of these days.

Yes, basing on my personal experience living in the state as a Viet. You see them wave the South Vietnam’s flag everywhere. Constantly call for the destruction of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. And of course rabidly support any anti-communist actions just like those Cuban gusanos and Iranian monarchist. In fact, one of the most bodily dangerous thing to do in Orange County is have the current Vietnamese flag, red flag with gold star, on your body or car.
and socal generally sometimes
Yes.

I have a childhood friend who is one of them, yes. Absolutely.
The settler empire knows who wants free land (stolen from native peoples).
Don’t forget descendants of slave owners, religious fundamentalists too extreme for 1600s England, and Operation Paperclip Nazis.
America is where the rest of the world dumps their bigots and extremists, ever since England started doing it in the 1600s. The result is the world’s largest open-air lunatic asylum, being run by the inmates.

I see this often in this instance, what does it mean? I’m kinda new to lemmy and still learning the inside jokes and overall culture.
Some users use forum signatures of various kinds, and one user has one based on, I think, flags given on some platforms to accounts accused of potentially being bot accounts, and now people are just riffing on that. I think that’s where it comes from but it doesn’t particularly mean anything, it’s just a forum moderation joke.
Yep, it’s this. I saw a kitty on here who had its as basically this reading “cat”, I liked the joke, but I’ve always been more of a teddy bear than a classic “catgirl”, and this is “the commie bear website”, so I changed it up a bit. I’m not surprised others are also riffing on “suspected cat”.

Inventing a guy: American who is racist because all the brown people are gusanos
That better not be a real guy BTW. If thats a real guy I don’t want to know.
kid named ACP:
Millions of Gusanos all bound under Trump.
Tbh most immigrants in the US (especially documented ones, and especially those who pursue citizenship) shouldn’t at all be seen as an accurate reflection of their native country’s culture. For one, most countries in the global south are multicultural with countless diverse local cultures and extreme sociopolitical differences region to region, not at all homogenous like chauvinist Americans assume. And two, it’s very difficult to legally move to America without a lot of money or connections, so many immigrants tend to have been the privileged few with radically different beliefs from most people in their home town. Basically a whole lot of selection bias
Even Mexicans living in the US, while typically not as reactionary as natural-born Americans, are mostly against Claudia Sheinbaum/ say she’s “in bed with the cartel,” despite most Mexicans in Mexico supporting her. My Mexican friend says those who choose to leave are often seen as “spiritually gringo” people lmao

I believe that’s the premise of the post, which is why all of them are given some type of qualifier except Afrikaners.
