Lopes is a landlord who has gained notoriety for his public outrage at Mayor Zohran Mamdani. In a profanity-laden TikTok posted in February, he said landlords would “destroy the fucking city” by engaging in a property tax strike.

“Let’s start not paying the property tax for this quarter coming up. We’ll fucking bankrupt this city!” he shouted in the video.

Yes! Yes! Do it guys, that’s exactly what you should do! You should totally stop paying your property taxes, I would be so owned if you *checks notes* ceded your properties to the City of New York.

That would obviously be great, but would it actually happen? Or would they “work something out”? I can’t see the American system hurting landlords, at least not that much.

If you miss your payment, a lien is (typically) automatically placed on your property.

If you have a mortgage on the property, at this point the lender is required to pay the tax and fines and will add that cost to the balance of your loan. This does not resolve the lien.

New York is a Tax Lien state as opposed to a Tax Deed state, meaning that the lien is sold to an investor of their choice and then that investor may foreclose upon the property. I’m not entirely sure whether in New York this sale would be done under the office of Mayor or of Governor.

The crowd of zombies, complete with dripping blood and rotting teeth, filled out a crowd of small landlords who had come to discuss how a rent freeze would affect them.

The zombies, it turns out, were paid actors — and not told about the nature of their performance. Many said they did not wish to be seen supporting Gotham Housing Alliance or landlords.

Too bad they didn’t eat the landlords.
