Can confirm, I own a 1964 Websters Dictionary, and it defines Fascism as

A totalitarian form of government in Italy administered by the Fascisti (A political organization) which advocated the building of a highly nationalistic state, recognizing private ownership except when he state determined otherwise.

I have a Webster Dictionary from the 70s.

“A philosophy and political movement of extreme nationalism, militaristic imperialism, suppression of civil rights, and opposition to democratic social progress, expressed through the efforts of a fanatic minority to seize complete political power.”

Now I want Webster to put all their revisions up so we can see how a language dances. I’ve always loved etymology and the history of words, and think it’s important to examine historical documents with understanding of how the usage of a word may or may not have changed over time.

On the other hand, semantic arguments online are bad enough as they are now. Hmm.

As usual, leaving-out some key history:

Marcus Garvey, a Black African, claimed that HE invented fascism, & Mussolini stole it.

Marcus Garvey wanted segregated North America & Africa, & was willing to work with the KKK to achieve that.

White “history” that systematically leaves-out the nonwhite parts … isn’t good-enough.

    Accuracy is better.

I just read about Marcus Garvey and I have absolutely no idea why you are conflating his Black Nationalist views with Fascism. I gave your statement the benefit of the doubt before reading about him, and now I regret that.

Fascism is not some nebulous term. It isn’t “working with your enemies.” It’s a system designed to fully repress the proletariat in favor of capital. It does this in a number of measurable ways. I am truly at a loss for why you brought this up.

      Huh, never heard of him.

Marcus Garvey wanted segregated North America & Africa, & was willing to work with the KKK to achieve that.

That’s what the founders of Zionism did as well.

Intriguingly, Garvey founded his (proto)fascist organization in 1917, even before Gabriele D’Annunzio seized Fiume, but so far I have seen no evidence to corroborate his bold claim that Benito Mussolini ‘copied’ from him. Given that the UNIA and PNF arose in similar circumstances, copying would hardly have been necessary, and I am deeply uncomfortable with the implication that a Black person was the root of Fascist atrocities.
