Also wonder if it’s a short season, usually they’ve only been 10 episodes the last decade or so. Maybe they’re trying to stretch it out because from what I’ve heard, ratings have been very high

Ironic that they’re a huge part of the overton window shifting as far right as it did post gamer gate.

Not just post gamer gate. Their rampant mocking of anything “liberal” has enabled a ton of brainless chuds over the years to think they’re aligned with the social dogma. I constantly heard conservative idiots, most of whom didn’t even like South Park for their mocking of Christians, suddenly find the Prius and LA mocking hilarious among many other things.

South Park’s psychotic need to mock everything makes them a pretty frustrating influence on the Overton Window. All they really succeed at doing is normalize the mocking of charicatures of the “other side”, which hurts intelligent discourse in general.

Mock everything worth mocking. If we can’t laugh at ourselves, or notice shortcomings, we’re fools.

          Not everything is sacred.

Sure, everything shouldn’t be sacred, but satire is a unique form of art.

“Satire requires a clarity of purpose and target, lest it be mistaken for and contribute to that which it indends to criticize.” - Ivyna J. Spyder

Or similarly, “Satire is meant to ridicule power. If you are laughing at people who are hurting, it’s not satire. It’s bullying.” - Terry Pratchett

South Park frequently makes errors that directly affront those two gems of wisdom. Their insistence on mocking everything makes them bad satire even from a basic literary perspective.

South Park has been true to those tenets. They enjoys devoting ridicule to the fads of the moment. South Park basically exists to take the piss out of people who seek to impose their will on others. The Prius episodes and calling bikers fags are prime examples of taking the piss out of left wing targets that made cultural taboos out of traditional ideals. It’s just as infuriating to the right when Trump and Norm are the target. South Park tears down ideas and heroes alike. Always have.

In a time where being trans was strange and new to many Americans, they introduced Mr Garrison as Mrs Garrison. This portrayal was incredibly unflattering and cruel. Garrison seemed like a crazy perverted teacher. The trans community is still in desperate need of acceptance and understanding. I didn’t know what a trans person was when these episodes aired (I was still a kid) but I immediately recognized these episodes seemed to be written by bullies.

They also spent a great deal of time depicting his sexuality as deviant. The entire lemmywinks thing was offensive (based on offensive stereotypes and urban legend), and so was the character Mr Slave.

That’s just off the top of my head. I wasn’t a regular watcher because their show was frequently mean spirited and definitely punched down a lot.

You’re succeeding only in failing to actually understand what those quotes mean. South Park frequently makes a mockery of people that are not in power nor are aiming to harm anyone. That’s directly against Pratchett’s quote.

Their incessant need to make fun of everyone also changes them from poignant satire to a giant mess of asshole jokes at everyones’ expense, which goes directly against Ivyna’s point that satire needs to be done with clarity of purpose and target.

So… no. No, South Park genuinely does not stick to those tenants. I will agree that some of their seasonal overarching stories can mostly qualify as good satire, but they enjoy mocking everyone a bit too much for the bits of good writing to come through unscathed.

Giant Douche vs. Turd Sandwich is one of South Park’s most beloved and enduring episodes, and it’s basically a long argument against voting, and look where that attitude has got us.

Anyone who voiced any form of progressive or inclusive thought was mocked as being a PC baby constantly through the show. Low hanging fruit punching down, made for easy material. And that’s nothing to say of years before comparing all candidates to a shit sandwich or a big douche.

They’re not whining about jokes they don’t like, they’re pointing out the toxic bothsiderism that Trey and Matt have been pushing for years. Simpsons did the same thing for the 2000 election. It’s been giving the much bigger problem party, the Republicans, cover for their heinous acts for decades.

Episodes 1 and 2 were OK. I though I’d outgrown SP, as I didn’t really enjoy the past seasons as much as I did the earlier ones, but the Vance lube gnome made me actually chuckle out loud.

After giving up on SP years ago I watched S27E01 a few days ago. As always I appreciate the timeliness, the cojones to parody Trump with Trump cutouts, and his double was pretty good.

But the episode was disjointed, it wasn’t really telling a story, and didn’t make any new points. Meh.

I think pointing out that idiots like Rogan have basically turned into real life copies of Cartman is a pretty valid story in today’s situation.

Not the deepest plot for certain. Still I think enough to get a season long thing going at least though.

Hmm… what do you mean by new points? Like what? Trump has been either president or looming over the presidency for a decade… I’d be profoundly surprised if anyone manages to come up with anything new to say at this point, comedians or otherwise.

Pretty sure an episode every other week is how South Park usually rolls, innit? Or am I misremembering?

Pretty much always. There is even the documentary about the making of South Park called “6 days to air” because they famously do the entire episode in a week.

I really can’t remember when they didn’t do episodes weekly. Before Season 17 (when it was still 14 eps per season) they did two blocks of 7 episodes, but within the blocks the episodes were, as always, weekly.

Yeah, I’m aware they do episodes in a week. But I am still under the impression this isn’t the first time they release it every other week. Pretty sure they had other instances of taking a week break in between episodes

Yeah, especially in the first 3 seasons they had quite the wonky airing schedule. And at least once they missed an episode because they couldn’t finish it on time.

But for the vast majority of their run it has been weekly.

Up until covid, they always had an episode a week. They used to write, compose, voice and release it in less than 7 days.
