On this day in 1976, Palestinians initiated a campaign of resistance, including a general strike, occupations, and violent confrontation with police, in opposition to Israeli settlement plans. The uprising is commemorated annually as Land Day.

Land Day was not a spontaneous uprising, but the result of months of planning. On May 21st, 1975, activists and Arab intellectuals held a meeting in Haifa to discuss a strategic response to Israel stepping up its campaign to appropriate Palestinian-owned land. This began a series of meetings over which the campaign was conceptualized, including a general congress that was the largest public gathering of Palestinians in Israel since 1948.

On February 14th, 1976, more than 5,000 residents rallied in the village of Sakhnin, calling for a general strike in response to Israeli repression. To prepare for the strike, local land defense committees and branches of the Communist Party distributed leaflets, organized demonstrations, and held meetings in several Arab towns and villages.

The first confrontations began on the eve of Land Day, March 29th as demonstrators in Arraba demanded the release of a local activist, closing the streets and setting fire to tires. Israeli soldiers fired on demonstrators with live ammunition, injuring many of them.

The following day, the general strike was initiated in Arab towns and villages, including the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and refugee camps in Lebanon. Israeli troops and border guards in military trucks and tanks raided Arab communities to arrest activist politicians and disperse demonstrators.

In total, six people were killed, approximately fifty were injured, and three hundred were arrested. When some of the injured applied for compensation, the Israeli Ministry of Defense categorized the Land Day confrontations as “combat activity”.

The Interactive Encyclopedia of the Palestine Question describes Land Day’s legacy this way: “Land Day was a turning point in the orientations and tools adopted for Palestinian struggle inside Israel. After Land Day the Palestinians in Israel gradually structured their presence as a national group inside Israel in a way that went beyond their local struggles.”

During Land Day protests in 2018, seventeen Palestinians were killed, including five Hamas members, and more than 1,400 were injured in shootings by the Israeli Army during a march calling for the Palestinian right of return at the borders with Gaza.

Could we actually get a side-wide ban of AI-generated content on this website? Let’s have one tiny place of refuge from the fully sloppified world out there

I’d agree with this also, replying to people using LLM generated content is not fun since the bit actively harms the planet at the same time.

Also posts discussing AI slop should have a CW on the post title. Some of this stuff is just genuinely either heartbreaking, horrifying, infuriating or a mixture of all 3.

a large part of me despises zionists in a way that i cant describe and finds them disgusting to the core, for all the obvious reasons. hateful worshipers of death.

but another part of me just weeps at the fact that human beings can turn out that way, and my heart breaks that the world we live in incentivizes so many human beings born innocent to become monsters. in a way, fighting for a better world is fighting for these people’s past selves, who were born simply wanting comfort and peace like anyone.

im still clear eyed about the current situation, though. based on my dealings with them, these people would probably be completely cool with killing all of us if they thought they could get away with it, and should be approached as such. it’s just a sorry thing that it got to this point, that’s all.

Hexbear is the leftist version of stormfront. These people want a second holocaust in Israel. They created a closed off community that has essentially become a transgender Marxist cult. They justity everything evil that might tangentially benefit the left because it’s funny to them to push the envelope. Russian invasion of Ukraine, cute. The Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th, justified. They love Muslims until you bring up China putting them in internment camps then their 2010 Reddit Atheism surpasses their love for Islam which is hypocritical when they are all fucking gay. Hexbear has no morals, I don’t know if they are actually trying to be evil. You literally cannot say death to America and have that mean anything peaceful. This site is trouble for the wider Lemmy community and does not speak for the entire left.

These people want a second holocaust in Israel.

Close, I actually want Israel to stop doing genocide. Any force necessary to make that happen is acceptable to me. If a strongly worded letter could create a free Palestine then I would get a nice pen to sign it with, put some stickers on it, and put kiss marks on the envelope.

If you have to break someone’s hand to make them drop a gun, I’m not losing any sleep over the hardships of them having to wear a cast.

They literally believe great replacement theory but for israelis. Like If all Palestinians expelled since 1948 are allowed to return and restored to their property, then it isnt a holocaust because the lands of Palestine arent majority jewish anymore or something.

Touched some grass and caught up with some friends. They all had stories about how trump was impacting their workplace. One person said ice was hanging around neighborhoods near their school to pick up parents, another said doge cut muti million dollars projects at their business causing layoffs and no funding. And then we just went on with our lives. I don’t get how they don’t get more angry or radical

Feeling my sense of child like wonder and hope for the future igniting in me again niko-wonderous been looking into a union nearish where I live that does apprenticeships for heavy machinery. My college days produced nothing of use for me but hoping this could be the thing I need for a future. It’s a paid deal and union benefits would be nice just need to keep tabs on when I can apply and do my best on an entrance exam.

eh it was a lot of busy work and if I was left to my own devices it would have been nice but it’s such a stressful place with all the gossip and fucking over everyone was doing to each other. more on the work it was just loading and unloading tractors full of plants from one side of a huge green house to the other. Sorry if I’m ranting still kind of peeved on how things shook out, if I can get by certs then it’ll be harder to toss me out I hope

Ew that sucks! And I am always down for venting/ranting, though I dont consider what youre saying either of those. Workplace drama absolutely sucks; like we spend more time with our coworkers than friends and family we should at least try to get along somehow or leave eachother alone. Either way I hope you get into the new gig! Seems that finding work has been tough

Some great quotes from my history professor today

    • “America isn’t fully capitalist and has socialism, it’s just paid for by tax payer money. You don’t have to shop around for a fire fighter! Since America has some socialism it’s Cold War foreign policy was hypocritical.”

    • “The USSR and China never moved past what Marx called ‘state socialism’”

    • “This is because Marx was utopian and didn’t account for human nature, humans will always act in their own self interest.”

The whole liberal “it sounds good on paper but not in practice” expression is so funny because they don’t even know what’s on the paper.

I’m going to say that based on that second bullet point, Chinese and Soviet embrace of Lasalles theory of state socialism, Marxism-Leninism would technically count as an offshoot of German social democracy.

Marxism-Leninism is objectively the moderate wing of social democracy sans-troll

It’s funny that Canadians are so addicted to neoliberalism that even our frothing chud politicians have convoluted plans. It’s always like we will end Le wokisme by creating a temporary tax deferral for capital gains taxes on money reinvested in eligible Canadian corporations.

      Ah, the old saying

In the UK, their politicians careers get cut short because their politicians hands end up in some girls skirt

In America, their politicians careers get cut short because their politicians get caught in the closet with another man

In Canada, our politicians careers get cut short because our politicians hands get caught in the till

There are people who want to be able to take their dogs anywhere, people who don’t want dogs anywhere, but there is a third way. Every restaurant has a two dog minimum. You also have to pet every dog that’s there.
