Even Stephen Harper — a member of an evangelical church himself — avoided public association with evangelical Christians due to political considerations.

      I don’t think there’s a group this guy wouldn’t be seen with.

      Pride parade?

      Attending a drag story hour?

      Truth & Reconciliation ceremony?

      Food Bank?

So, now that churches are political meeting grounds and being used actively to capture and court voters, they’re going to be required to start paying taxes, correct?

Somewhere deep in my memories there is a Royal Canadian Air Farce skit about Preston Manning (I think) and how he “didn’t campaign on Sundays.” The joke is that him highlighting his supposed piety of respecting the Sabbath was, in and of itself, an act of campaigning. I did a quick search for the skit and couldn’t find it, unfortunately.

Now, decades later, we have a party leader not just campaigning on Sunday, but making political speeches from the pulpit. I can’t help but think this is a step backwards.

    • Strangely enough, this came to mind today. I think it was 22 Minutes and the commentary was “And here’s Stockwell Day not campaigning on a Sunday with 23 members of the press.”

It might have been 22 Minutes instead of Air Farce, and it might have been Stockwell Day instead of Preston Manning. I couldn’t find a video clip using any combination of show and politician.

As I said, it’s deep memory from long ago. I mostly remember it for personal reasons and not the actual joke. But, you’ve reassured me that it wasn’t just a hallucination on my part.

The weird thing being he doesn’t even need an edge right now, he’s just doing overkill, while setting himself up to be booted off by a more radical right figure in the future.

I get doing a Hindenberg when you’re on your back foot, even if I think it’s as bad an idea as ever, but he has a near shoe-in.

IIRC, “heritage” is in there because they can’t just openly be the Christian party, by law. They’re not fooling anybody, but it’s enough to pass Elections Canada muster.

Luckily Canada is getting more and more secular each year, and even people who believe in a higher power are less invested in organized religion. This is a losing strategy for Pierre and the Conservatives, but it probably won’t have any meaningful effect until 2029

Mass conversion to atheism is a deeply established, decades-long trend everywhere developed, and hasn’t slowed down one bit in any data I’ve seen. I’ll take that anecdote with a large grain of salt.

I’m not talking about overall atheism rates. More so extremely overtly religious people seem to be on the rise where as the same people used to be a bit toned down.

I mean it’s worked elsewhere and the religious crowd has already shown themselves to not be good critical thinkers so you have ideal election fodder.

Looks like gay marriage and abortion will be banned once elected. Unlike the states you can do anything here with the notwithstanding clause. Even hate crimes are legal once the clause is in effect. The only way to remove it is with a change in government.
