It’s also on GoG https://gog-games.to/game/diablo and Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/Diablo_1996_Blizzard

To play the source port all you need to do is copy some files from the retail into the folder and it’s good to go. It’s also got quality of life changes like monster health bars, widescreen support, and a stash that transfers across characters. There’s also multiplayer for classic and hellfire!

Oh forgot to mention, the GoG release runs on Windows 7+ while the original release from Internet Archive I think you need to download DGVoodoo 2 or another wrapper to play on a modern os. Honestly it’s easier just to dl the original game, copy the files, and play the source port Devilution X.

I fucking loved OG Diablo. Diablo 2 was a great sequel but the original had more of a Gothic horror vibe that I adored. I remember talking my extremely Catholic parents into buying it because it lets you fight the devil. There’s probably a 3.5 floppy disc somewhere in my parents house with a couple original character files from Diablo/Diablo 2.

I tried Diablo 3 but it just wasn’t scratching the itch. Didn’t even bother with anything after that from Activision/Blizzard.

Edit: I do have the GoG version of D1 so I’ll be trying out that source port.

Hope you like it, been playing it myself and it’s great. And I agree with your take on D1, I love D2 also but the overall look of D3 was something I wasn’t interested in.

My headcanon for D1 is that you’re not literally descending multiple levels. It’s more about your sanity deteriorating thanks to Diablo’s machinations so that you’re hallucinating the demons and lava in the later levels. When you’re killing Diablo, you’re not actually killing a big red demon but wailing on some kid who Diablo possessed.

Of course, the headcanon makes no sense with D2, but it’s still fun to think about.

I never really got into diablo 1 as a guy that loved diablo 2. Diablo 2 felt just really fast and responsive. Diablo 1 felt clunky by comparison. What am I missing ?

It’s just slower and has a bit more of a roguelike feel to it. It’s true that D2 basically did everything better but the changes are so drastic that it still leaves room for D1 if you prefer that kind of play.
