This instance is supportive of DIY HRT, but not DIY SRS for good reason.
DIY SRS is out of the question due to the complexity. DIY orchi is a landmine. The procedure itself is relatively simple, but trying to do it on yourself is where the trouble is.
But mutual aid DIY orchi? A group of trans gals getting together, learning how to do it, and performing it on each other? That could probably be done safely. That’s basically what pre-modern trans women did.

I remember a very similar book being read to me in kindergarten in the '80s. I don’t think it was a woodcutter, but but an indigenous kid. The story was after they died they got to choose how they were reincarnated.
Yay someone else read it! The book resonated with me for a reason that took about 30 years to figure out. Published 1987. You’re misremembering some of the details but yes that’s the one.
