As I get older I see the same stories being rinsed and repeated for regular public consumption. This story from 2020 shows how bus and trains in the midlands have had similar measures in place for some time: https://www.wmca.org.uk/news/new-set-of-byelaws-to-clamp-down-on-anti-social-behaviour-on-the-buses/ and this one from April 2025 outlining the Lib Dem plans for £1000 fines and travel bans https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cly5g7v2qddo was so popular that the Tories recycled it and trumpted it as a great new idea in August 2025: https://news.sky.com/story/ban-passengers-playing-loud-music-on-public-transport-say-tories-13417519 None of them look at enforcing the rules that are already in place. There already exists bylaws to prohibit this kind of behaviour but zero thought about enforcing them.

Our politicians seem to view laws as being like magic spells, which become unbreakabely binding once spoken.

Which is nye impossible. The public transit around me can’t even enforce fare evasion, not saying they should, but it shows how hard it is to enforce something like this.

Laws like this require shame to enforce it, sort of like indoor smoking bans. The people on the bus have to say “stop blasting your tik tok” , if we do that enough, people will understand it’s unacceptable behavior.

Will I do it? Hell no, I’m not that confrontational, but the rest of us definitely should.

Good news if it was actually enforced. I vote that bus drivers use the tannoys to say, “Hey, who’s that plonker on the upper deck playing AI slop? Turn it off, you muppet!” I don’t know what they should do when they get inevitably ignored.

(It’s nearly always AI slop revenge stories or bhangra (might not be bhangra exactly, I’m Indian but I don’t actually know the different genres. Desi stuff anyway.))

In my experience its constant scrolling tiktok. You get to hear the AI lady saying “watch what happ-” “when my br-” “pov you’re-” “askin-” “im in love with my new set of-” “when the-” “going to-”

I’m getting enraged thinking about it.

No, it won’t. I’ve been on buses and trains where this has happened. “We will not be moving until the freeloaders depart or the British Transport Police arrive.” Well, the people who don’t care they’re pissing off everyone around them already won’t care if it’s being pointed out, meanwhile all of the paying customers are being delayed, being made late for work, being made to miss the connections. You can’t use shame on the shameless.

They used to do this 10y+ ago on the buses in London, but they must have been trained to just ignore it now for safety reasons. The freeloaders just waltz on shamelessly and nothing happens. Last time I was on a bus and the driver stopped, the freeloader got up to the driver’s cab and threatened to stab him.

I don’t mean shame. I mean irritation. There’s a difference between freeloaders, which isn’t even something you can identify or give a shit about, and an asshole playing loud music or tiktok. Eventually someone will break the silence and/or break their nose.

The right sentiment but without enough inspectors and transport police to enforce it it’s practically meaningless.

        EU austerity

Ah yes the EU, famously able to convince the UK to adopt the union’s monetary system.

Brits still delusionally blaming Europe for their own mistakes.

Lol, maybe you should learn about EU austerity policies that were enforced, while we in the EU

And while you’re at it, learn the difference between monetary systems and budgets.

          Tool.

Maybe you should present your own list of these imaginary policies. As they exist inside your head it would be pretty hard for me to learn about them otherwise. The UK were never subject to the Troika austerity policies.

Or I guess you really believe you’ll be seeing that £350 million any day now.

Nowhere in the paper you link does it imply that the EU imposed austerity policies on the UK.

The Tories are the only ones responsible for the fiscal policies adopted after the recession.

The EU imposed policy on all EU members. I’ve listed them, perhaps you should acknowledge that there were EU wide policies?

What do you think happens when you put austerity measures in a single market, more or less economic activity?

“How dare we deal with minor problems while there major problems even if those major problems are also already being dealt with and we have the capacity to do both.”
