It’s time Smith reevaluates his hot take-first approach and considers the consequences of his actions.

While the idea that SAS holds any position legitimately is kind of laughable, there is an underlying narrative here. He’s saying this to articulate a very common and unhealthy attitude that professional sports is somehow a nobler calling than any other and that living out fans’ vicarious fantasies is some moral obligation. The fact that he said it undoubtedly means a lot of people, most of them men, feel it.

I’m in some ways basic AF about things like pro sports. I enjoy them despite a whole host of underlying issues. Still, I always try to segregate what I feel as a fan from what these people, some of whom have never known anything other than a toxic pressure cooker of a lifestyle, actually need and feel for themselves. If somebody wants to bail four games into a season, or in training camp like Andrew Luck, then so be it; clearly whatever they were dealing with was intense enough to override a lifetime of SAS’es telling them how they are supposed to think about their chosen profession. If there’s any upside to the obscene amount of money the stars make – apart from the fact that it annoys their billionaire employers to give it to them – it’s that it should allow them to be free to make their own decisions.
