sometimes i just don’t want to litigate it with people I just met at social events with food, awhile ago i was doing a short term job with some conservative boomer who thought even the vegetarianism was dangerous for me bcs he knew a gay couple who ‘got very ill from never eating meat’ a few decades ago.

[Picture is a late 16th / early 17th century painting called ‘The Vegetable Seller’ I saw a few years ago and was thinking about recently - English Heritage article about its restoration process: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/audley-end-house-and-gardens/history-and-stories/vegetable-seller/]

edit: for the record i am actually lactose intolerant + was unaware for years and cutting out dairy was probably the best dietary decision i’ve made from a pure personal health standpoint and my day to day quality of life

You’d be surprised. We checked the “vegetarian” option (bc apparently vegan isn’t possible) on our kids daycare menu and they still wanted to give them fish. I love their teacher who raised a stink in the kitchen about it though.

The most common type of vegetarian still eats dairy and egg; they just don’t prefer flesh. It’s wrong to assume vegetarians are opposed to all animal ingredients. In practice, if you order at a restaurant, it is necessary to be clear that no animal product should be added. Condiments don’t always register as “meat” to non vegans

anti-veganism was fascist normalizing from the start. it takes no time to find the same “arguments” it used being applied in defense of human rights being stripped away

A friend of mine said that veganism is a petty bourgeois pursuit. When I asked her what her reasoning for that statement was she didn’t reply to me and stopped texting me for two days. Statistically speaking vegans have lower incomes and are more likely to be supportive of socialist causes, petty bourgeois my ass. She’s also the type to point at PETA posters and say “they cow actually wants to be eaten” – I know PETA sucks, but that is a horrible angle.

I have to just say I’m vegan. It’s way too personal to ever misrepresent. If people wanna get into it, I’m pretty good at disengaging and moving on. I don’t respect carnists enough to let their words linger.

It’s the same as any other political position for me. I’m not gonna go out of my way to debate coworkers or whatever, but I’m not using any euphemisms. I’m a communist, I’m a vegan, yes I think you’re a shitty person for abusing animals, yes I think your landlord should be executed, yes I think your uncle who’s a cop is an enemy of the people. I never couch, I never deflect.

I did basically this at my last job for the same reason, it was a much easier way to just end the conversation. My other favorite is telling toxically masculine meat enthusiasts that it’s cowardly to eat something that you didn’t kill yourself and watch them either squirm about it or just change the subject

I consistently refer to myself as a militant vegan at work and social gatherings because if I don’t they will do the social food thing where they tell me to try whatever flesh they’ve brought along. I want them to be weird about veganism because that sense of disquiet is more convincing than trying to remind them to watch some documentary. They should feel weird.

The real hassle with omni social food events is that they invariably eat through whatever vegan thing I brought before anything else for some reason 🤔

Im not really sure of the morality of eating honey, aren’t the enclosures ok for the bees and they leave if they don’t like it? If they’re messed up I’m open to learning about that. Regardless, I don’t eat honey bcs I’m getting my sugar consumption down, I’m trying to minimise risks of tooth decay and I’m scared stiff of losing my slim figure.

I have zero desire to talk about veganism at work. Like 30% of people want to be told they are not a monster. “I have a lot of dietary restrictions.” is my go-to when offered something. For pot lucks we have cards where you check off allergens or common restrictions from a list. I gave them ideas for the list.

I guess people can be really nosy about lunches. I’ve never had someone say “I never see you eat meat” it’s usually “You’re always eating so healthy!” I do sometimes say “I’m a strict vegetarian” if the topic of chit chat is food or fashion and I’m asked about something directly.

You’re right though, the word vegan really makes something snap in their heads.

People do get weird and i’ll never understand why. Suddenly they become a food scientist and when you proof them wrong they give me the: “eeeh, i don’t care”

But you did care a minute ago.

After a while it also just becomes a food preference. Like, anything with egg in it smells disgusting, I don’t know how else to describe. For me now, even if I had a change of morality or if they invented super-moral labgrown meat, I could never eat it.
