I swear every consumable good is like this. Can’t enjoy anything without some gambling and FOMO. Toys come in blind boxes now so you can’t just buy the ones you want, scalping, addiction mechanics in all the games.

fuck scalpers but also fuck the pokemon company. they could kill the entire scalping parasite industry in an afternoon by introducing print-to-order or literally any other business model besides booster packs which have always been predatory bullshit.

The game itself is very affordable with the most playable cards getting multiple printings. That means most of the good stuff is never more than a few bucks for the base rarity of most playable cards. Competitive decks are around $30-50 and rarely reach $100 at most.

There’s also the fact that any hobby that involves buying anything at all has a niche community promoting buying the “best” and latest versions all the time and congratulating each other on doing that. A lot of people seem to spend more time doing that than actually doing the hobby.

This thread seems to be mostly about trading cards and collectibles, but it’s crazy how much its permeated all kinds of hobbies. I remember being a young person writing songs and playing music, and the primary motivation was “making it.” Making art and imagining myself being a famous artist, etc. Ironically, the point where I quit art school wasn’t long after realizing that the job was just kissing the ass of rich people to get them to buy stuff.

Now I’m a bit older, but it seems like I’ve gone too far in the other direction. My house is full of art that I can’t get the gumption to show, I just give it away for weddings/birthdays/Christmas/idk just coming over and acting like my art is good. I practice music a lot and play frequently but only play out very rarely when a couple of buddies find a show. I’ve been bringing my guitar places to plunk on but there’s not like a time or place or interest.

So you’re either doing stuff for money or for its own sake in isolation.

God yes!!! I tried for a bit to get a craft library going but i got snubbed out by some local queen bee type. It was a whole thing. (well at least assume that’s why they ghosted free help) but yeah there is so many crafts and hobbies I want to try but the start up costs just to see if it’s something i’m interested in, is such a fucker. Like, a kiln is a great example. Why the fuck is there not a community kiln??? just cause someone wants to do some pottery doesn’t mean a house should go out and buy a fucking kiln??? I could go on and on.

I really like tcgs. I like to build decks and play the games. Even stuff like rare cards with limited availability. I truly hate scalping because of that. You’re supposed to come across a cool card in a game shop and save up $10 for it, not looking at $15,000 listing on eBay.

I think scalping cards came from streamers tbh. Once that took off as a streaming category, it just became gambling streams (I mean, it always was but you know what I mean) and the big streamers doing it were willing to shell out a lot of money to get packs with more expensive cards. So people started buying up every pack they could.

Not that I could afford it anyway, but at the end of August they are releasing a Project Hail Mary steelbook. It’s meant to be £39.99. However they are already all sold out at the official retailers, over a month before even being released, and scalpers are already selling them on ebay for over £100. These scalpers have many each. Why are they even allowed to buy multiple of a limited edition item that hasn’t even been released yet? Now the real fans can’t afford one. Capitalism just sucks.
