Edit: Original link was removed for Rule 6, but the YouTube version is up now anyways. Edited to replace the link because it’d be a shame for good discussion to be lost.

I watched this last night, and honestly, aside from the buddy system that nobody asked for and what appears to be some kind of morality/criminal profile system that makes very little sense in a GTA setting, I saw remarkably little that actually interested me.

Yes, it looks absolutely gorgeous. Yes, there are heavy plot elements, impressive character animations, and an enormous amount of polish. But underneath all of that, I’m not seeing much that makes me think, “Holy shit, this is what GTA needed to become.”

    And that’s what concerns me.

My fear isn’t that GTA VI is going to be bad. It’s that Rockstar has spent all this time trying to “innovate” when they really didn’t need to. GTA already has an incredibly successful formula. Give us a massive, reactive sandbox, better AI, smarter police, deeper heists, more emergent gameplay, better vehicle physics, and more freedom in how we approach things. That’s innovation enough.

I don’t need GTA to become Red Dead Redemption with cars, a morality system, relationship mechanics, and a heavily scripted narrative.

I’m also increasingly worried about the industry’s tendency to try to appeal to the broadest possible audience while simultaneously designing around increasingly specific demographics. You can end up with a game that technically has something for everyone but somehow loses the thing that made people love the franchise in the first place.

Just look at the new Wolverine game. That’s exactly the sort of direction I’m afraid of seeing more often: taking an established property and deciding that it needs to be something fundamentally different rather than simply making an excellent version of what people already liked.

All Rockstar had to do was make another GTA. They didn’t need to reinvent the wheel.

I really hope I’m wrong about this. Because if GTA VI turns out to be an incredible open-world crime sandbox underneath all the cinematic presentation, I’ll be the first person to shut up and enjoy it.

    Please be right, Rockstar.

It’s actually kind of insane how much of a lock the sales of this game are. I can’t think of many other things that were just garunteed to sell like this. Apple products?

It would. I initially had this post pointing to a Streamable link during the exclusivity window, but it was removed for Rule 6. Not sure how that rule interacts with alternate YouTube frontends like Invidious, but I’m not going to press my luck.

If anyone wants an unauthorized stream that bypasses YouTube and Netflix, they’re not hard to find with a simple web search. If that’s too much effort, you’re not missing much anyways.

They should mark this as movie trailer with spoilers. I pretty much played it on skip and saw maybe 1 minute of gameplay without story.

Okay after watching this video, I figured out what the deal is with this game I don’t connect with: Netflix. They all wanna do their games now like it’s a Netflix show. Not just Rockstar, but all of the major companies.

Graphically… it looks great. If what we’re seeing isn’t just all post-effects they slapped onto the video.

The dudes voice I don’t like. Apparently I’m not the only person judging by some of the comments I’ve read heh. He just sounds like a doofus white guy. But an unfunny one at that! And they’re somehow making his voice sound Deeper? Like if 1990s, Point Break, Keanue had a deeper voice I guess is what they are going for? The problem like some others have pointed out is that the voice doesn’t match what we’re seeing as the Model.

Eh. Anyways whatever. I’m old. I prefer the old school goofy cartoon GTAs over this Netflix Amazon Movie shit they put out now. I’m not big on Hyper Realism these days. Kind of over it really. That’s just me though.

Well it’s releasing on the PS5 so it would be pretty dumb if it doesn’t actually work on the PS5. Anyway what the mostly showed was cut scenes and they are easy to optimize because anything that’s literally not on screen can just be unloaded.

I remember when the very first teaser came out for this and people were going wild. I asked in a streamers chat (first mistake) if there was any actual in-game gameplay footage or it was just a CGI/cutscene and the streamer chewed me out lol. “Let people be excited about things!”

To be clear there is a difference between pre-rendered cut scenes and in game cut scenes. I’m pretty sure everything we saw, and have seen so far, has all been in game cut scenes.

But still I suspect that the game won’t be the same quality out of cutscenes as it is in cut scenes. Most games actually have two different character models depending on if you’re using it for gameplay or cut scenes, and it’s how GTA IV did it.

I wonder what the DRM situation will be like.
Will they have some hopped up version of Arxan that’s gonna be super hard to crack?
Or is the PC Release delay good enough that they aren’t particularly worried about piracy?

Of course given the popularity and antecipation I’m sure there will be all forms of groups trying to take a stab at it, but I still wonder how it’ll go down.

The game won’t run without an armed agent pointing a gun at your head who will pull the trigger if you ever start enjoying it the wrong way.

GTA IV was the last one I’ve ever owned. Been tempted by 5:00 a few times but I have got enough games that I’ll never play. I don’t need it as well.

Seems like a good game but the expensive price plus the fact it will be 30FPS on launch is a no-go for me. Will wait for PC release (if that ever comes?). Got enough backlog games anyway.

I wonder how many hardworking people they’re going to plunge into uncertainty by ruthlessly laying them off.

At least the line will go up
